hello,

i'm new here, and i will be beginning my cna training this january. i also hope to work as a cna through nursing school, if i can earn reasonable pay while working part time, re: nursing courses are rigourous.

sooo, are there any pro-active steps i can take to land a job in a hospital once i earn my cna certification?

Many hospitals want you to have experience before they will hire you. The best thing you can do is talk to HR and ask them what they require. When your course is complete, apply to openings regularly and call HR to check on the status of your application. THere tends to be a lot of competition for hospital positions, partially because people perceive them to be "better" than LTC positions (which isn't always the case, but that's a whole different subject), so it can be helpful to volunteer so they get to know you.

If the hospital does require experience, as many do, apply everywhere else you can to get the necessary experience. Any experience will help you as a new nurse when it comes to being comfortable working with patients.

Good luck!

thank you yousoldtheworld.

I landed the first hospital job that I applied for. I started with a cover letter explaining that I had no medical experience but am eager to learn. In my resume I was sure to include any and ALL customer service related experience!!!! Customer service really is what this position is all about, you need to have STRONG people skills to be able to care for others. Dont be afraid to brag on your resume about your personality and other skills that show you are great with people. HR told me that it was my personality and drive that stood out the most and made them want me :) Good Luck to you! You can do it!!!!

i got lucky and had an apprenticeship for nursing. They are paying for my first year of community college to get pre reqs out of the way and they paid for the CNA training I received from the community college. Then after that my director of the program got all the students placed in either nursing homes or hospitals affiliated with the union, so I got lucky out of all my friends and got the opportunity to work at one of the best hospitals in the state. The people are so nice and willing to help and they promote within because there are more jobs in a hospital. This was my dream facility and I got in and Im only 18, almost 19! So I plan to grow with this facility because you definetely will learn and experience alot.

Just dont be intimidated by the interviewer and show an interest and ask her some questions about the facility. Just be open and honest and be very enthusiastic! Make eye contact even if you hate it (I am one of them) and smile!

Good luck :)

thank you all for the good advice.

Tell them you are going to be a RN, hospitals love this. Also, just keep trying. I applied at a half dozen hospitals before I got my job.

I applied for a hopsital position as a pct 5 months before they actually called me and I was working in long term care. I guess that the experience I had gained in those 5 months helped but they did really like to hear that I was planning on attending nursing school. I also figured out my particular hospital doesn't require you to have cna cert. you basically need to past their test within HR.. I don't know if many places are like this or just the hopsital I'm at.

I work at LTC and I want to get into a hosp becuase I think it is better. I'd love to hear the pros and cons sometime.
