I’m wondering what is the norm in other hospitals for PRN holiday requirements? In my unit we used to be required to do one Summer holiday shift (as night shift the eve before a holiday or the night of the actual holiday) but now they have increased ours to 2 Summer and 2 Winter holiday shifts which is the same as full time staff ?. Does anyone else think that’s crazy? I don’t get any benefits, pto or even a yearly raise but they want me to work the same holidays as those that do ?

I'm used to no requirements for per diem (working as much or as little as one desires) or current hospital, which requires 3 shifts/5 week schedule but no obligation for holidays or weekends

Agree the original understanding of per diem during my career was/has been that the trade-off is no benefits in exchange for significant control over own schedule and usually an increased hourly rate. Things seem to have morphed quite a bit in some places and whether the new requirements are common or not, per diem still means "by the day." So my answer to this would be no you aren't telling me what I'm doing 6 months from now. You can call me if you're short on Christmas and see if I'm available that day or not.
BTW, all of this morphing has been happening while the gap has almost completely closed in pay rates (staff new hires making same as or more than per diem).

The hospital I work for requires per diem staff to work a minimum of four shifts per month, one Summer, and one Winter holiday. It has been this way for over 15 years; so managers are lax on the four shifts per month requirement.
