I am a retired police officer who is interested in respiratory therapy. I have free health insurance from my previous employer for the rest of my life as long as I do not work for someone who is offering me insurance. I am not allowed to decline it if it is offered I will lose my free benefits. Therefore I must work in a position where I will never qualify for benefits to be offered. Does this mean that if I work 40 hours per week that I will always have to take one week off or or 19 hours or less for at least one out of every four weeks and is this workable realistically?

The place I work at offers prn employees health insurance if their average is 30 hours+ a week. How would your previous employer know if you were offered insurance though?

Different employers have different policies. You would need to talk directly to individual employers. I don't know if resp therapy works the same as nursing, but it would be v. difficult, in nursing, to get hired into a prn position as a new grad; employers want prn people to have significant clinical experience (from previous full-time experience). And I've never seen or heard of anyone being employed in healthcare and taking off one week/month (outside of a prn position, that is). Employers hire people because they need them to be there on a regular, ongoing basis.
But maybe you'll be able to figure something out, who knows! Best wishes for your journey --
