Private pay?

Hi guys just curious as to what people suggest for my situation. I want some input.

This is is the story: I work for a home health agency. Currently I am covering for the regular nurse who is on vacation. Eventually this nurse will be leaving the agency so until then the family is going to split us with days. 2 days me, 3 days her- 8hour shifts. They just offered to pay me privately until they can make me full time when the nurse leaves.

They said for 4-5 hours for 2 days. They said give them a price because they will pay me out of pocket until maybe they can get money from the patients trust account.

I work in Los Angeles. I currently get paid $18. What do you think is reasonable to tell them since they will pay me out of pocket? I'm trying to be logical since I won't be paying taxes, so I can say less. I was thinking $16per hour? Or is that too low?

You are legally obligated to report all wages received even if "out of pocket" especially if working in a licensed role as an independent contractor. If they are accessing funds from a trust you will likely be given a 1099 and obligated for quarterly employment taxes.

Are you an RN?

Yes I know I should report, but it will be about $180 a week, seems not even worth it to me. I'm going to take my chances. :/

I'm not sure how they will pay me, they will actually let me know Monday, I told them my price today.

I am an LVN

You need RN oversight. There was a new grad considering a PDN case. No RN, 2yr old care plan, etc. even if not billing insurance you still need to meet the standard of care for documentation and orders.

If paid by a trust be prepared for a 1099 and mandated self employment taxes. Know your risks of not reporting income and make an educated choice. I think you lowballed yourself if less than $20
