Private Duty nurse not working through an agency

Hello!

I have a friend whose daughter has CP. As we all know it can be very difficult for families to cover all their approved CSN hours. I am an RN currently working with a homecare agency, however my agency no longer allows overtime and I already work 40hrs a week. My friend stated that she has no problem paying me privately. Since I would not be working with an agency does my professional need to change to the "self-employed" option? How would I file taxes and such. I feel clueless and want to be able to help her out. It wouldn't be every week, only when nurses call out or for an occasional weekend shift.

Any info is appreciated!

You would need to make sure you are crystal clear with your current employer as to your wishes and plans.

You will likely want to change your and save for taxes. Lookup 1099 employee and the tax requirements for that. Lots of IRS information on it and from 3rd parties, if someone does your taxes they may be able to help you.

I would look into creating a contract with your customer(s) and make sure that you are crystal clear on expectations and duties. I would also call your board of nursing to confirm any special rules.

If you are going to get deep into this I would recommend you create an LLC or other shelter to protect your assets.

PP offers excellent information. My first concern was that to investigate any breach or conflict of interest between you and your agency. You could be considered as 'stealing' potential care hours from your agency.

Second thought was to make sure you insurance carrier was also aware of your pt/nurse relation role.

Just remember too, that if you would ever need time off (own illness, emergency, vaca, school, etc), there would have to be a Plan B for pt & family.
