Preventing falls in the Geriatric community

Published

Hello, I am doing a project, and I would like to know what is your opinion in why so many falls occur in the geriatric community.

1. Why geriatric patients that present to the ER with a complaint of fall at home end of falling while in the hospital?

2. What information do nurses need to know in order to prevent seniors from falling when triaging?

3. What information do patients need to tell the nurses or health care provider to prevent falls at the clinical setting?

4. What are we missing to prevent falls even if the resources are there and why?. PLease help!!

Obviously there are patient related factors and health conditions that cause or significantly contribute to falls or put patients at risk of falling.

I have a feeling most of us would tell you that your assumption in #4 of resources being adequate is incorrect.

Most of what I have seen on the ground involves this: We know patients are at risk of falling, we don't want them to and know it is bad for them, we are told it is our fault if people who fall....fall, and we are told to not let them fall. Everything beyond that is a mishmash of interventions we are told to do in hopes of not having them fall without using up any additional resources to actually prevent it.

Hi JKL33 thanks for your answer.  This helps a lot in understanding the different points of view from collegues and practices.

What is your practice in identifying a pt being high risk for falls?’ For example, questions you are using, screening tools, information you want to know from senior pts,etc..

I will leave that to someone currently working in the ED, I've been out of there for a few years. I can't say there were a ton of people falling down during my time there (many years) and many are treated as higher fall risk due to altered sensorium, altered mobility (either chronically or acutely), weakness (either chronic or acute), medications they have received,  etc.

Thanks JKL33, even tho you have been out for years as you mentioned. This answer helps a lot.
