pressure of plastic surgery nursing

Hi everyone,

I was recently hired by a very well renowned plastic surgeon on the upper east side of Manhattan. I've only been working for a week and a half, but I feel like they are going to fire me. I haven't done anything wrong, I've just made normal new job mistakes because I don't know the exact flow of things. Like I wasn't ready when the surgeon needed a gauze pad after taking out a suture or I sent an e-mail to a rich client with the wrong subject header and she freaked out and cc'd it to the main surgeon. Basically I'm worried that they aren't going to give me a fair shot. I've been a nurse for 10 years and worked in ICU and ambulatory surgery. Can anyone give me any advice who has worked in plastics or for a private practice? I really want to keep this job. It's my dream job and I know I can do a good job at it.

Thanks!

Erin

I haven't worked in a private clinic. I work in an ambulatory surgery clinic that does all kinds of surgeries including 1 - 4 plastics a day. I do know plastic surgeons, and their patients, can be very picky and demanding.

Did you get any orientation? Your mistakes are so minor. It takes time and money for the surgeon to replace you. I don't think he they would fire you over such minor things.

The surgeon is lucky to have an experienced nurse like you.

Smile, take a deep breath, square your shoulders, shake off the jitters, and do your job. You're a great nurse with a strong background.
