prescriptive authority

Published

i was curious -

i was under the impression that as APN's/CRNA's we had the ability to prescribe.. how do we go about doing this...i know that if it is a controlled substance you must be DEA registered... not that i really plan on needing to ever use that ability - but as for regular prescriptive purposes.. ie... cipro for a UTI... how do we go about being able to do this?

Maybe I misread, but I don't think athomas wants to prescribe meds for him/herself. The law varies by state, check with your BON. Most states have APNs work with or be supervised by a doctor.

business prescribing any drugs beyond the immediate perioperative timespan, they have no need to do so and they have no training that enables them to do so safely.

especially the thought of crna's prescribing in a painmanagement setting is hard to contemplate, are you people actually aware of the legal ramifications...?

no disrespect

First off, if you mean "no disrespect", maybe you shouldn't refer to us as "you people." Seriously, that is just plain condescending. Secondly, have you ANY IDEA what the training is to be a CRNA? Do you realize that our education in anesthesia is very heavily based in pharmacology?

UUUHHHHHGGGGhhh, I will stop here and suggest you get a little information before you continue to post on the CRNA forum.

p.s. Your responses have NOTHING to do with the original posters question.

sorry for calling you "you people", i don't mean to be rude.

anyhow, no, i don't know what the training is to be a crna, but i can't imagine that the medical/pharmacological training or knowledge is equivalent to a md.

i understand that crna's work in the or , isn't that a somewhat narrow spectrum of medical care? i mean, i'm sure you could be experts at prescribing musclerelaxants but that is not the point.

This is actually starting to border on comedy here. Seriously, please stop... you may not realize this, but you are embarrassing yourself. Lucky this place is anonymous. I noticed you come from an ER background... maybe you should lurk there for a while. Or, why don't you go ahead and read some of the more "clinical based" threads on this forum. See if you can keep up, maybe chime in there too....

thats awesome, the crna has 5 titles and 12 (!) letters behind his name!!

does that mean he is so much better than the humble do ?

seriously, wouldn't it be easier and maybe even more honest to make the effort to go to med school and become a real physician ?

i note that in my hospital you recognize a np or pa by the white coat...;)

again , just the thoughts of someone who just starts out in nursing..

hey versatile, i was just wondering.. i looked at the kish hospital website and saw that an anesthesiologist is on board as well.. so protocols and his orders would be sufficient for the crna to carry out 'whatever', no? as an NP does, would the crna still have their own DEA? for that, i cannot find literature anywhere, at this point anyway.

my thought exactly, someone has to co-sign or at least carry some form of responsibility:bow:
