Was anyone else called for the RN New Grad Interview at PIH? Anyone went through their New Grad training? Thanks!
Hi, I interviewed at PIH last week and I am waiting on a call or email still. I thought I did fine during the interview but you never know. I would just like to know basically how the training was for you as a new grad, I know they said it was only about 6-8 weeks and it seems so short to me. I do not know anyone that works there or has applied so I would just like some input from an RN currently working there. Thanks so much.
I applied online.
The interview process was pretty straightforward. When I interviewed, it was me, the unit director for the floor that was hiring, and the nursing recruiter. They took turns asking me basic questions (i.e. strengths, weaknesses, goals, etc.) and a unit specific question (What would you do if a patient had chest pain? - it's a cardiac floor). Then they gave me a chance to ask questions, which I did. That was it - they called me back a few days later I believe - or maybe the following week. I've been here for just over a year and I love it so far!
The training is not a Versant program but it is better than some other hospitals I have heard of. The first 2 weeks is classroom training, where you learn policies and brush up on skills and competencies. The next 4 weeks (or so - you can ask to get an extension) is a preceptorship where you work with another, more experienced RN. After that, you are on your own, but you can choose someone (your preceptor or someone else) to be your mentor and support you if you have questions or need encouragement.
It takes a long time to feel comfortable on a given unit, and it depends on the person. I don't think the training program here made me less prepared than any other program would - it was a good program, but it could have been more organized and specific to my learning needs. Overall, I love my work!
