Lucky New Grad With a New Job!!
The job market for new grads out here is not good at all, from what I have gathered from recruiters it is one of the toughest in the country right now. I have heard similar things about the east coast too. My ultimate goal is to work labor and delivery but I also loved my rotations on almost every other unit so I am sure I will be happy wherever I end up. I think I just like nursing overall! :) Volunteer-wise I am acting as a concierge (where I basically direct people around the hospital) and I also volunteer on a telemetry unit helping the nurses out with whatever they need. If you find a hospital you like I would try to get on the floor as a volunteer because that is where you will meet the managers and where you will get the most experience that is relevant to nursing. I agree with you about the economy, there is nowhere to go but up :) I hope things are better by the time you graduate!

Lucky New Grad With a New Job!!
Spore- My program was a year as well and it was definitely pretty intense but I loved it :) I haven't had any interviews yet but I also didn't get permission to take my nclex from the california board of nursing until the end of august so I have only been officially licensed for 2 months, and where I'm at the new grad apps are just starting to open up again so I am hopeful :) I know its going to come its just a matter of patience and perseverance. I am definitely making headway at the hospital where I volunteer so we will see what happens there when they get some job openings! You will definitely have to gear your resume towards nursing but having your previous degree, career, and publications will just add interest and show you have professional experience. I think you will be better off in that area than me since I went straight from my bio degree to my ABSN and have little work experience (being 23 y.o. and spending the last five years in school). Your experience will set you apart and I think that will work to your advantage. To add something to what people are saying above, a good gpa and graduating with honors is definitely going to help (that being said I have 3.96 gpa, magna cum laude, and no job :/ haha). I know it can be hard with such a quick program but it is another good way to set yourself apart.

Lucky New Grad With a New Job!!
Spore2008- I just happened to see this thread and I wanted to jump in! I completed my ABSN in may from a school in AZ (previous biology degree) and I am now in california looking for my first job :) There are definitely a few things I wish I would have known before I started this whole thing so I wanted to share them with you so hopefully you and other new grads can benefit! 1. Even though it doesn't ALWAYS work, networking can REALLY help. Start networking while you are in school. Treat clinicals as job interviews. Get contact info for nurse managers and unit directors so that when you graduate you know who to call/email. Ask preceptors for letters of recommendation, and meet as many people as you can while you are in school. It could be the difference between you landing a job right away or waiting for months and months like others. 2. I know a lot of people will tell you to get an externship but this is not really plausible time-wise for ABSN'ers. SO VOLUNTEER! This is the perfect way to make connections and get some experience for your resume. Most places only require a few hours a week or every few weeks which is totally doable. Volunteering has led me to meeting unit directors, nurses, and even the CNO of the hospital so it is a great thing to be doing for a lot of different reasons. 3. Get certifications before you graduate. The big ones out here are ACLS, IV certification, and EKG courses. If you find you want to go into peds, get PALS. Every recruiter I have spoken to has recommended these so its something I would invest in. 4. Have your resume and letters of recommendation ready to go about 3 months before you graduate, that way you aren't scrambling at the end. 5. Make a list of hospitals in your area so you can keep track of start dates for new grad programs, who you know there, how to contact them, things they require, etc. Organization helps you stay on top of it so you don't miss any apps (it also gives you a sense of control even though you might not have any lol) Honestly I would never ever tell anyone not to get this degree even if it creates more job competition because I haven't regretted this for a second. I know if I do everything I possibly can, the right job will happen at the right time. Its all about attitude :)

NAU accelerated Nursing 2010
ok another question haha yay..... how possible is work during the program. Im not talking anywhere near full time just a couple times a week. Its a job where I could study while there so its nothing serious and it promises to help BIG time with tuition. I know the nursing office told me I could work a limited amount but I was wondering what actual accelerated students do. Its hard for me to believe that people are actually able to pay for this without working at all. sorry to bug you with all the questions but its really helpful to know what I am up against from someone with first hand experience. so Im super grateful for all ur help!

NAU accelerated Nursing 2010
crappppp. well I am 22 so my parents are still claiming me as a dependant so my efc is definately not zero. I applied for all the NAU nursing scholarships available including the rwjf which i hope i get. I am trying to calculate tuition out but I dont know if I am doing it right so correct me where I am wrong, so far I have two fall semesters at about 8,000 each, one spring semester at about 8,000 again, and two summers which according to the nau website are cheaper and it doesnt look like it matters whether you are out of state or in state. The first summer should be about 4,000 based on 13 credits and the second should be about 3,000 based on 8 credit units. so Im looking at about 31k for the whole program not including books, supplies, and living expenses. HOLY CRAP. I better be getting some scholarship money or I am going to broke for a long long long time. Now Im starting to get a little stressed......

NAU accelerated Nursing 2010
yelnikncwawa I was wondering if you could help me with some questions.. I am out of state and was wondering how much tuition was for the accelerated program per semester, if you know, I dont know if you are in state or out. Also I was looking at the hrsa scholarship. Have you heard of it? It looks like I might be too late to apply for it because it says the next application cycles recipients will be notified in the fall which is already 2 semesters into the NAU program. I am desperately trying to figure out how I am going to pay for this so any info you have would be greatly appreciated.

NAU accelerated Nursing 2010
wow I haven't looked at this site all week (i have been studying for a biochem exam) and it looks like I missed a lot! dkittle I didnt get a message I wonder what happened to it. I didn't apply anywhere else because my boyfriend is applying for the physical therapy school at NAU and we want to be in the same place. Is that true about the program changing to 12 months? oh my gosh that would be amazing. I would love to start my career asap and not have to pay for the eighteen months! my advisor has not emailed me back yet but I have started to look into scholarships. does anyone have any info on those. I'm still in college so I am broke and dont want to put myself into any more debt than necessary.
