Prerequs for the prerequs :-(

Ok I know they do this for a reason... so you are prepared and have the background you need. But I am almost 34 years old and anxious to begin a nursing program. I have to take A&P1 and Chemistry before I can submit my applications. But now I just found out I have to take Biology as a prerequ to A&P, and Algebra as a Prerequ to Chemistry. Have others here had to go through this?

This is really going to push back my whole plan. I have no doubt that I can get into a program and do well. I am a good student - already have a Bachelor's with a 3.7 GPA. and I am caring and good with people. But these Prereques are killing me. Any suggestions? I was told that I could possibly test out of the Bio and Algebra if I study up on my own and get a passing grade on the CLEP exams. Has anyone done this and do you think it would be a realistic option?

Thanks!!

Um, yeah I just went down there on Friday and they let me sign up for both of the classes I need. No one checked any prerequs?? So yay. But I'm still studying Algebra and Bio on my own as I want to have a strong foundation and will probably still take the CLEPs just to be on the safe side.

As to the math thing, when I got my degree in English there were a wide range of options that would count for your math requirement and somehow I was able to choose a "computer science" class for that. Not sure why they counted that - I was happy at the time cause it was an easy A but now it's coming back to bite me in the ass! Anyways, the Algebra book I have is really good and I'm learning a lot.

Cally, I am applying to 2013 Part Time as well! I saw that Bio was an option but figured I might as well do the A&P 1 now since we need it anyways...

Have you thought about taking either A&P or Chemistry online at a school that doesn't require those pre-reqs and then transferring them? I know online courses aren't for everyone, but hey, it's an idea! I know JCCC in Overland Park doesn't require prereqs for either class...

My story is similar. I'm an old fogey (37) returning to school for this. I knew I didn't have the math skills so I made no attempt to test out of algebra. I knew I really needed to take the class.

Oddly, Biology isn't required for A&P where I'm at, but I most certainly had to do the Algebra-->Chemistry-->A&P route, as well as English1-->Intro to Psych-->Developmental Psych.

i couldn't agree more - just this winter semester I took A&P and Chem both with labs, both killers. should i listened to anybody's advise not to take them both at the same time or take prereq chem-intro I would perform so much better. I got both B+ but have learned on my misery and immediately cut off one of my spring classes not to overdo at this time :)

I also have BS in financial management, and consider myself reasonably smart but i had and still have shortage of bio, chem, math.

Congrats on getting to sign up for the classes you need! I am currently taking AP1 and Intro to Chem and I gotta say that it might be a good idea to get the AP book and start to study that! My prof. has said that when she teaches the summer sessions she has a lot of people not do well because it is such a large amount of material to learn in such a small amount of time! Let me know if you want the info about the book and what chapters to study!
