Pregnant and pushing stretchers

Published

Hello everyone,

I am a newly pregnant ER Technician, 8.5 weeks. I have had issues with miscarriages in the past so I am reluctant to share the news with co-workers until I reach my second trimester. Unfortunately my job requires mostly patient transfers and a lot of manual labor. Normally I enjoy what I do but lately I come to work worrying how I am going to avoid certain dangerous situations. I get subtle cramps when moving patients sometimes and it worries me. Anyone have any advice on how I can avoid looking like a lazy tech but still ensure the safety of my pregnancy?

I'll start off by saying congrats! :) Then tell you to definitely bring it up with your OB, who I'm sure knows your history in depth and will be better to offer you advice than anyone on here. With that said, I was basically in the same boat as you a few years ago. It was my third pregnancy, two miscarriages prior. I was really worried, but I was a nurse, so although we are on our feet just as much and do heavy lifting as well, I'm sure you do it much more. I knew my limits. One day I started spotting....about 9 weeks along. I went home immediately and to my OB, who inadvertantly took me off of work until I was 14 weeks along. Everything turned out fine...thank God. But, really it has to be a decision between you and your physician. They want you to be safe as well.
