pregnancy and getting a job

Wow, this is a tough one! I think the biggest disadvantage you have isn't really the potential pregnancy but the fact that you have been out of school for a decade without obtaining any work as a nurse. Regardless of the other activities you mentioned, you haven't kept clinical nursing skills up to date, let alone gained any experience with those skills. That'll be your biggest challenge, I think.

I'm just going on what I think I'd do in your shoes, but I'm guessing that looking for work in an out-patient clinic setting (like ambulatory care?) would be a decent start. I'm also guessing you are an RN, not an LPN...? Some medical offices prefer LPNs, as they can pay less than for RNs, and they don't usually need the RN license for the office. Depending on that, you might consider a medical office, in that you could get into the swing of mild, simpler procedures (in-office stuff) without a high patient load.

Could you take a refresher course? I don't know much about them, but I know they DO exist for exactly the purpose you'd need one: for those who are out of practice to learn current practices and such.

your biggest challenge like the above poster said is not pregnancy but the fact that you have no experience as a nurse. are you licensed??? if you are, you will need to do a refresher course and go from there. any employer looking at your status will not feel comfortable hiring you unless you can show that you have current exposure to the field of nursing.

yes i am an RN. so i guess pregnancy is not what i should be worried about but my exposure in the nursing field. i'd like to ask if my exposure in the department of anesthesia would count as an acute care experience? it was very recent, from 2006 to 2007 and i played a very active role in handling patients in the OR and PACU. i did peripheral iv insertions, peripheral central access device cath, endotracheal and nasotracheal intubations, anesthesia administration, assessment of patients preop and post op, i really am hoping that it would coz it would save my husband and i money. But if enrolling in a refresher course would be the best path, then i guess i would have to squeeze that in our budget. Than you so much for your response, i really needed it.
