Pregnancy and Gential Herpes

Hi Nurse Friends,

Do women with gential herpes have to have a c-section?

Specializes in L&D.

My OB instructor said that they recommend C/S's for women with herpes (who are not in an active outbreak at time of delivery). SHe seems to think that in the next couple of years, it will be the rule.

My OB's office, however, does not do C/S if the mother is not in an active outbreak and takes antivirals for the last month of pregnancy.

That's just what I have heard/learned.

no.............they can have a lady partsl delivery if they have no active outbreaks at the time. To ensure this..........they are put on antivirals the last 6 weeks of pregnancy.

if in active outbreak, yes they need to.

but most often these ladies on are on suppressive therapy, so many do deliver lady partslly w/o problem.

From what i learned in nursing school... like what the others said...

if the pregnant woman has an active outbreak then they should get a C-section.. but if there aren't any present then they can have a lady partsl delivery.. hth

Just to confirm - I just witnessed a lady partsl birth from a mother with herpes (not active) in my last clinical rotation. Everyone was healthy and happy!

We only do c/s with an active leision. If a leision is picked up in pregnancy , the woman is treated. There is no reason to do a csection with inactive herpes....

:yeahthat:

No automatic Csection without an active outbreak.

When I was doing clinicals my patient had a lady partsl deliver with inactive herpes, all was healthy

.

I certainly hope she's wrong. Complications from unnecessary surgeries are already high enough.

Even where I am (and we section at the drop of a hat) we do prophylactic meds and lady partsl delivery.
