I am an LPN returning to school to get my RN. Its time to decide if we want to do a preceptorship for spring quarter. Can anyone share with me the bennefits of doing a preceptorship vs 2 days of clinicals with an instructor and probably 5 other students. What can I expect from a preceptor?

You will have one on one time with a preceptor and will be able to see the nitty gritty of a particular unit. If you have any inking of what kind of nursing you want to do, this is the best way to find out if it's really for you. If you don't have any idea then I would suggest doing the regular clinicals.

I'm a new grad myself, and I did an intern program at the hospital that I'm currently working at, so I've had a few different preceptors for the last 5 months. I've settled in the ER, and I'm loving it! It's really nice to be one-on-one with your preceptor...they can devote more time to teaching you than could an instructor with 5 other students. I've liked developing a relationship with the different preceptors I've had. What can you expect from a preceptor? Well, I would want someone who is experienced, encouraging, and likes to teach! I hope my experience is helpful...I would encourage you to do the preceptorship, but whatever you choose, I hope you love it!
