Hello everyone!

I will be starting my senior practicum in a Level III NICU this week! I'm so excited as I feel that NICU nursing is my calling! I'm hoping they will offer me a position after graduation (in May). I purchased the Merenstein & Gardner book...but haven't read anything yet. Is there anything in particular you guys think I should review before beginning my preceptorship!? I want to be prepared...but there's so much information, I don't know where to start!

Do a Search within the NICU forum. There's a post in here that has a list that I used for my practicum and it was extremely helpful!

Start with respiratory issues since a lot of your patients will probably be on ventilators. Definitely look into which meds are most commonly used and look up why they are used and the major side effects. I can post a list of some of those meds a little later today, but i don't have it on me now.

I did my senior practicum in a nicu as well and was just hired in a level iv nicu, so let me know if you have any other questions!

Learn the basics with well newborn babies so when you read about the abnormalities of the neonate it will be crystal clear. When you come across something you do not understand look it up and read about it; before you know you will be on top of it. Do not let any nurse intimidate you they were not born with NICU tattooed on their rear; they use to be where you are now. Your critical thinking will come as well. Just become a super sponge. You will learn so much and I hope you get a great preceptor that will let you jump right in. One of the things I always tell new grad nurses when the day comes you are no longer scared in the NICU, leave it! You will never stop learning in the NICU!!! It is a rewarding area to work, grow, and, expand your knowledge. You may decide to be a NNP or an educator embrace it become certified. Welcome! Wishing you the very best in this area.
