Preceptor???

Does EC ever set up preceptor programs for their students? Is it possible to train with a preceptor before taking the cpne? Any ideas on what to do to ensure no fail attempts?

In Arizona, we have a mandatory 120 hour preceptorship that we have to take after passing CPNE and prior to graduation. EC sets it up for us, with hospitals theyve already chosen. It costs something like $300 for them to do it. Ive said many times that if they can do it in AZ, why cant they do this in all states so that we can get the experience we need (and maybe all state boards will take EC seriously). I would contact your advisory and they may be able to guide you the right way. Another idea, call the unit managers at a hospital ED, med-surg floor, OB, etc and see if you can Shadow. Of course you cant do any hands on due to the nurse practice acts and such but you can observe. Im thinking of doing a bit of this before going to the CPNE. Good luck---let us know what EC says.

For run of the mill completion of the program, EC does not deal in preceptorships. Any of this now in existence is because of recent stipulations placed on EC by individual states to sit for the NCLEX. If you desire a program with a preceptored clinical component, you should look into the Indiana State University program, or the University of Oklahoma accelerated BSN program, or even the BSN program. Each of these programs include preceptored clinical training requirements to graduate. This is in addition to anything that the state may require in order to sit for the licensing exam.
