Preceptor help?

This may be in the wrong topic so feel free to move if needed.I have been a nurse 18 months on a busy CV tele floor. I have been told that I am going to precept a new grad nurse for a month. I am scheduled to take the official "preceptor class" in May. Does anyone have any good advice on how to teach, and turn out a good solid nurse at the end? Any advice is appreciated and welcomed. Thanks!

As a recent new grad who started on a tele floor these are some of things I could have gained from.....

1. Organizational Skills

2. Time management

3. Medications frequently used on floor

4. Remember to take a break

5. Go potty!!!

6. Learn to say "No"

7. Learn to delegate

8. Review roles of each staff member

9. CV tele is not just cardiac pt's, don't just rely on cardiac knowledge.

10. If you need help ask.....you will be respected more than just thinking you know it all or being embarrassed to ask.

I kept a little pocket sized notebook with me at all times that i would write down codes, doctors, extensions, charting criteria,

discharge instructions, etc.

I also took home my brain sheets and used them to review labs, gain critical thinking, review notes from the day, things I missed and things I got right.

Understand the "why" in labs, tests, or procedure orders.

If I think of more I will post more. It is still one day at a time for me too.

You have him/her for the first month so you're expected to teach him/her the basics. Stick to the basics you know and don't feel pressured to teach beyond your present knowledge. Show the orientee how to get around and where to they can access help if they need it. Invaluable introduction.
