precepting in ICU

Published

Hey everyone,

I'm in my last semester before I get my BSN (Dec. 13th!!), and next week I will begin precepting in the ICU 3-4 nights a week. I am super excited, but also very scared. I have this fear that I don't know enough. There is so much to information to remember...especially in the ICU. Anyone have any suggestions for a quick brush up on common stuff seen in the ICU without hauling out my 50 lb nursing books? Do any of you people that have done night rotations have suggestions on adjustment? I've never done a night rotation. I will be working Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays 12 hours/day. Thanks for your input.

As a student who just spent 2 very intense days in ICU for clinicals, my advice would be to brush up on the medications used in critical care, review some of the equipment (balloon pump, Swan-Ganz, art lines etc.) and remember that you are not there alone. Your preceptor will help guide you and let you know what you may need to review:D

As for working nights, which I personally prefer, find a sleep schedule that works for you. I am such a night person that staying up really late the night before my first shift, :yawn:then taking a nap the next day gets me through, then I just sleep during the day. :zzzzz

Good luck!!!
