Pre-Reqs

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Hi Everyone!

Do any of you know of accelerated BSN programs or directy entry MSN programs that do not require pre-reqs? or ones that will tentatively accept you in to the program, assuming you take your pre-reqs at the university before you begin your official program?

I would like to apply to a direct entry program in the fall, but it would be impossible for me to take pre-req classes right now since my job is a little crazy (i typically work 9 am - 8 pm or later.) I could quit my current job and try to find another with less crazy hours, but considering the unemployment situation i'm pretty luck to have a job at all. It would be crazy for me to quit, especially simply because i would be counting on a potential future acceptance into a MSN program.

any suggestions or advice?

I have never come across any nursing program that didn't have prerequisites. Every accelerated BSN/grad-entry MSN program has the same standard prerequisites (microbiology, A&P) and some have additional ones (stats, chem, nutrition, growth and development). I don't think you are going to find a program that doesn't have SOME prerequisites because there are just some things you need to understand in order to be a good nurse. In addition, even if they don't require you to have taken the prerequisites at application, they are all so competitive that you will be at a serious disadvantage if you haven't taken *something* they are looking for and received a good grade. It's not like they are just trying to see if you can jump through hoops. They are looking to find people who will be successful in a very rigorous program.

I have never heard of a program with no prerequisites (and wouldn't trust one, either!)

However, there are plenty that accept applications while you are in the process of finishing the classes. When I applied, I was taking A&P1 and nutrition in the fall, with plans to take A&P2 and microbiology in the spring. My applications were due in the fall, so I didn't have grades for any of these courses at the time. I did have tons of other coursework though ... so the schools had a very clear idea of how I had done in previous science courses.

I encountered a few programs that wouldn't accept applications if you were still completing classes. Some would accept applications if you only had 3 or 6 credits left to finish. This is usually spelled out pretty clearly on the website or application. When in doubt, call to be sure. No use wasting time or money on an app if they are just going to toss it.
