pre reqs piedmont & CCHS

U.S.A. North Carolina

Published

hi everyone,

im thinking of moving from cali to nc (charlotte area). i was looking at 2 adn programs: central piedmont and carolinas college of health sciences. i went to the website and got the info.but,i had a couple of questions.

it looks like if you have never had chemistry, you need to take 2 chemistry classes for central piedmont. (chem 121/121a & chem 131/131a)

what the heck? for a adn program???it also says biology.what type of biology? it's not like i can go over to the counseling department.

carolinas college of health sciences requires sat scores.what scores are getting in?

admissions criteria are completely different than california. we have to finish all the sciences before applying. i cant imagine how any nursing student could take anatomy and nursing courses at the same time! we also have a lottery system as long as you get a 3.0 gpa on the 3 sciences and 2.5 on support classes.

any information on these 2 colleges would be great.

thanks!!

Hi amber74,

I know a lot of people who went to Piedmont and CCHS and they both have great reps and do their clinicals at the same hospital..

SAT scores at CCHS probably have a minimum, but I can't think of what it is, I think they take ACT scores too.. The telephone number on their website should connect you to the school and you can ask for the admissions counselor-most people who work there seem to know as well..

Probalby 50% of the school takes their pre-reqs (English, A&P 1-2, Micro, etc.) before actually starting nursing classes (or at least the majority of them).. the other half take it together.. It can be challenging at times, but it is doable.. I would advise going at least 1 semester and just doing pre-reqs for CCHS, and probably anywhere to cut down on the stress..If you are working/have kids I would imagine it would be best to do so..CPCC has a lot of online classes that will transfer to CCHS as well which some did.. A lot of people also took the CLEP tests to test out of some of the basic classes like English, math etc. They are good about transferring credits from the past..

They don't use the lottery system, but most people are put onto waiting lists now, since they all get a fair amount of applicants..

Thanks fun in sun.I have a few courses done, but some are not needed for NC.

I have:

Pre algebra-A

Algebra-A

Nutrition-A

Human Development-A

Psych 1-B

English 1A-A

cpr for heath provider

Im going to take Sociology,Speech and intro to anatomy and physio in Jan.I was going to wait to take the sciences till I get out there.Im too afraid they might not transfer over.

I was more concerned on Piedmonts math and chem req.I got through algebra because I keep telling myself this was the last time I would have to take a math class(besides dosage calc)

Its frustrating all the colleges have different needs. You would think because it was going towards the same goal they would have the same req.

Thanks for the help!:)

I assume that the 2 chemistry courses are General Chem I and II. Frankly, I am surprised that other programs don't require this. The program I attended also required Organic Chem, for a total of 3 semesters of Chemistry (with labs). It really is helpful with some of the content in Anatomy and Physiology and Pharmacology. Good luck!

The overwhelming majority of our ADN students take their co-reqs ahead of time. It makes for a much easier course of study, once accepted into the program.

:yeahthat:

I took pre-reqs before starting nursing school at CCHS. Some I took online at CPCC - great way to go. I'd highly recommend taking as many pre-reqs as possible before nursing school - the nursing classes by themselves are more than enough!!

i am taking all of my pre-reqs for my adn (through cpcc) as well as my bsn (through uncc) online through cpcc. they even offer a&p i&ii and public speaking online!

the old chem requirement for cpcc adn program was just chm 121/121a, foundations of chem (high school level), but now they have gone to chm 131/131a, intro to chem. if you didn't take chemistry in high school (or it's been more than 5 years), you have to take both. if you plan on getting your bsn, you will need chm 131 anyway.

if you took a college level algebra class it should be transferable. get a transcript from your current school and have it analyzed by the student records department to see what courses have equivalency here. you may get credit for more than you think and you will be aware of what you need to take. just a suggestion, call early on a tuesday or wednesday, that's when i've had the best lucking reaching someone.

good luck to you!
