Pre req's in NYC anyone?

Published

Hi there!

I need advice as usual. I am at NYU about to finish my nutrition degree.. but i want to take the few pre req's that i need for an accel. nursing track.. i wanted to take my pre req's at a CUNY b/c of financial issues. Does anyone recommend a school in NYC to take A & P or mircobio?

Hi, Sqm!

I'm in a similar boat as you are! Am a former graduate from NYU & am looking for an area school to take some nursing pre-recs in. Hunter College used to allow non-matriculated students in 1980, but I am not certain that they still do so. Perhaps you have some more up-to-date information. I probably won't be formally re-admitted to NYU until Jan. '07, but I am not willing to waste time when I could be taking some of those pre-recs in the interim.

Thanx for any suggestions...for for allowing me to bend your ear!

Wish you well!

Hi everyone,

I've been taking my prerequisites at LaGuardia Community College. If you're matriculated, they control the flow of science classes. In other words, if you are able to go full time and only need the science classes, you can only take one science prerequisite at a time. Despite the fact that I'm a second degree student, they still would not permit more than one science class at a time.

They don't allow anyone to take Mathematical Dosing unless they have been accepted into their nursing program.

I've taken A&P I, Biochemistry, Psychology I and now have A&P II for this semester. I'm taking Microbiology in the summer. You can't take the Micro unless you have finished the A&P courses.

The courses are very demanding.

sorry. what i meant was that i wanted to take two classes this summer.. micro and a&p .. and i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions where i can take em in the summer here in nyc?...

Hi, I am out here in NYC and live in Jersey City. I took my A&P I and II in Hudson County and it was a major struggle getting into those classes because I am a non-matriculate student. I had to get the dean from nursing to sign off on letting me take that those classes and believe me, I am glad that its over. I took Microbiology at BMCC cause at Hudson they turned me down and even at BMCC they gave me a hard time cause I am a non-matriculate student. Its very hard to take these science courses unless you are a nursing student at these colleges. Like yourself, I am trying to get into an accelerated program out here in NJ as well as some schools in NY. Also, you wont be able to take Micro unless you are have completed A&P I and II. They are very particular about that.

My best advice to you, to make it easier without all this hassel is to take it at NYU or LIU or even Columbia and Pace. You will have to pay a lot of money to take these classes but at the end you have to determine how passionate you are and are you willing to wait. When I took Microbiology at BMCC, out of county I paid $1200 dollars for that class but luckily, my company reimbursed me for that.

So keep trying and dont give up! Good luck!

Hello, again!

I paid Hunter College a visit today -- very interesting.

I notice that the Chemistry requirements there are nine credits -- split between two semesters (4.5+4.5). While NYU is asking for five credits. Does anyone know of another area school that offers a five credit Intro to Modern Chemistry course? I can just imagine the frustration of taking one of the Hunter courses and then having someone at NYU (the powers that be) inform me that I must continue with "part two" to fulfill the requirement.

That is the type of thing a person would want to know ahead of time -- not after taking the course.... Of course, perhaps they would allow a little barter...say a person were willing to take another hard core course in the natural sciences, one with fewer credits.

I will probably pay BMCC a visit tomorrow, just to see what they offer...and to see to whom I may speak....

Have a good evening.

Hey Fleur2, I didnt know that NYU requires 5 credits for chemistry. Thats just insane. Which school offers chemistry at 5 credits? I took Chem I at Purdue which was 4 credits. Is it possible that at Hunter they want you to take Chem I and Chem II? If so, thats too much! Good luck and let me know how it goes. I hope you are able to take a few of your classes at BMCC. BTW, I just called NYU Nursing school and I spoke with someone named Stella, who did mention that they will evaluate that Chemistry class to see if it matches to their requirements. The person you want to speak with at NYU is Temi and her number is 212-998-5336.

Hello!

That's right, regarding Hunter. They have two courses in Chemistry...and to make certain that the Nursing students take them, they state (in catalogue, anyway) that they will not give credit for part one unless the student completes part two -- adding up to total of nine credits.

You probably already know that NYU is "shaking up" its Nursing program, and as of Sept. '05, Nursing has been moved from the School of Ed and placed under the College of Dentistry. Why it couldn't be placed under the College/School of Medicine mystifies me. For the time being the Nursing HQ are still located at Washington Sq., but I imagine that they will be moving them...when, I cannot say.

Got to go...have a good evening!
