Hi,

I have to write a moral position paper for my healthcare ethics class and I am at a total loss!!! We have to pick a topic and argue as to why it is immoral or moral. We were told that it had to be according to APA guidlines (what are these?) It has been 13 years since I have written a paper of any kind and do not know where to begin. Any advice would be great. I want to write on Animal Experimentation.

Thanks

Jenn

Take a look at

Check this out too, it might help.

At least for references, it tells you what APA format is.

As for topic, how about something on the Terri Schiavo case right now. Do a search on Schiavo at allnurses.com and you'll see all kinds of discussions. Also in this case, there are not just one ethical issue, there are many issues all lump into one. So you might want to isolate just one issue and concentrate on that.

What you probably want to do is to apply the different ethical systems that you are learning in your class to this case and do a comparison of it or something. In writing the paper, you want to demonstrate you understand the different ethical systems, their strength and weaknesses and so on.

See if your school has something like "Opposing Viewpoint Resource Center" or maybe in your local libraries. It is a database that contains arguments on both sides with hot issues.

As for animimal experinmentation, that is a fairly big topic. You might want to break it down into the following and just pick one of them:

  • In the cosmetic industry
  • In the pharmalogical industry
  • In scienticfic research
  • In biology class
  • Is the position you are argueing relating to "no experinmentation" whatsoever or "limited experinmentation with human treatment"?
  • What is being done right now in terms of government regulation (if I remmebered, there are actually quite a number of rules with regard to this topic)? Your evaluatiion of these rules.
  • ... others ideas I could not think of now

My guess is that in your class, you need to demonstrate that you understand the different ethical system and how they work in your paper.
