If I cannot get into a university should I look into private schools to get my BSN

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I am having a difficult time in finding a BSN program. I have been in community college for 5 years and did not get the best of grades when I first started. I have applied to Northern Arizona, Marshall University and U of North Florida. If I can get all A's in my 7 classes this semester my GPA will be at a 3.25. I know I am running out of options as many nursing programs deadlines have already passed. I currently live in California and am willing to go anywhere. I have emailed many public schools on the east coast and most dont take transfers or require a 3.5 GPA. I just started looking at private schools application deadlines and saw many weren't until April-July to get in this Fall.

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on this topic.

I currently have 3 attempts in microbiology which also limits me in the schools I would be accepted into. (took it once, got a D, took it again with the same teacher, got a D again.. took it in my last attempt with a different teacher, got an A...)

I did get accepted to my local state university but I would not be able to take nursing there. I would have to get my BSN in human development and then after than do an accelerated program. If I could get into a nursing program though, I would prefer to do that then have to wait two more years getting a bachelors in something just for the hell of it, to then get to nursing.

Thank you for your advice!

I would look into schools that allow 2 retakes. Even though you have taken micro three times, the second time you took it counts as ONE repeat, the third time counts as the SECOND repeat. I had to withdraw from micro once due to personal reasons and when I retook it I got a B, I was just accepted to MiraCosta as an alternate. There may be programs that allow 2 repeats.

Also have you considered southwesterns ADN program? If you did well in anatomy and physiology and your science gpa even with a D in micro is at least 2.5 you should

be eligible to apply to their program. They also only allow one repeat so you would just have to use your first attempt with the D. I just looked at their point system and it doesn't say anything about getting at least a C in the sciences. Just that you need a 2.5 gpa in the science pre-reqs. I would definitely try to speak with someone from the nursing department there. It's always better to talk to as many people as you can from the schools you want to apply to because some

may make an exception or their admission procedures may be slightly different.

there is a long thread on here for the fall 2017 ADN cohort and someone got in with 5 withdrawals in science.

Just figured Id let you know I emailed Southwestern and they did say I had too many retakes in micro. to qualify for their program. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Would they allow you to use your first attempt with a D? I know they don't allow that many retakes, but if they just require a minimum gpa in your sciences you could use that first attempt in micro instead of the repeats that don't qualify, as long as your gpa is 2.5 in your sciences with that D and whatever grades you earned in anatomy and physiology. That was more what I was getting at.

I would try to talk to someone on the phone or physically go there as opposed to email. good luck either way on finding a program!

The email I got back from them said

"This is our Nursing repeat policy:

Anatomy, Physiology and Microbiology- May repeat ONLY ONE COURSE , one time.

The Nursing program does Not consider W's ( withdraw as attempt) The school policy is different.

Micro (200) Microbiology) 3 attempts

You have exceeded attempts"

They didnt say anything about my GPA in the email. The second link you sent to me before for their Points Formula also states in the second box for GPA "one repeat for one class". As you said I could still try and go in to speak with someone. I did end up getting accepted into an ASN program in PA, and and am waiting to hear back from UNF in Florida and UMFK in Maine.

Thanks again.
