Hi All,
I'm a pre- nursing student awaiting the application process in a couple months. In the meantime I looked into volunteer work in the bay area and went as far as the background checks. However, I haven't heard from them since. It's been more than 3 wks and after an email, phone call, and visit (she wasn't in her office, so I left a written message)...what should I do? I want to start building my resume and would love to gain some experience being within the hospital.
Any volunteered before and experienced the same thing?

Hello :) I think it's great that you want to volunteer. I also volunteered while waiting for my program to start. It was a wonderful experience! I had to call a couple of hospitals before I found one with an active program. The first one was closest to my home but they never answered the phone. I left messages, they didn't call back. The second one was about 15 minutes away but didn't need anyone. The last one I left a message with called me right back. It was a 40 minute drive but worth the extra time. I learned so much and met many great people. The Volunteer manager was always available and allowed us to volunteer in different units. Definitely keep looking if you don't think they are going to contact you. Good luck on your search!

Volunteering is a Great Idea! Hospitals aren't the only place to volunteer, check out some free clinics too, they are always looking for volunteers. Also contact the school, and ask where they do clinicals at. Because it is a good idea to volunteer at a hospital where your clinicals will be held, because that way you could get to know everyone before clinicals.

I currently volunteer at a hospital a couple times each week. The first hospital I called seemed to be annoyed at me asking about volunteer opportunities, so I moved on. I would highly recommend volunteering! I start a BSN program next month and hope to be able to continue volunteering at least once per week. I hope you can get ahold of someone soon:)
