Pre-nursing student, PLEASE HELP ME DECIDE

Published

I was recently accepted into a dual enrollment program between two schools. I would have to do two years at Pennyslvania Institute of Technology (recieving an associates degree in allied health technology). Leaving there I will have certificates in being a Medical Assistant, An EKG tech, a Phlebotomy Tech, and a Mental Health Tech. After that I will go right into my junior year at Drexel. Because it is dual enrollment, I am GUARANTEED a spot in their nursing co-op program. I think that this is good because of the waiting list that many colleges and universities have for their nursing schools. BBUUUTTTT I attend Central High of Phila, which is one of the top schools in Pennsylvania. Alot of my friends are trying to make me feel bad about doing this program, telling me that im too good for this program, and that its an insult to Central.

I just wanted to know what you guys thought:typing. By the way its my first post. :yeah: Thanks!!!!!!! (268)

Pardon me, but if you're from an elite high school, with impeccable GPA, why would you not just apply to Drexel (or any other elite 4-year school of your choice) and get a BSN?

I actually did apply to Drexel, (waiting for a response) And having an impeccable GPA does not guarantee me a spot in any school I apply to. I DO have a chance of being denied. And I don't think you understand me. I would attend PIT for 2 years, with those two years making up my core classes, as well as other classes. Then I would go right into drexel's nursing program as a Junior and graduate with my BSN. There's more than one way to skin a cat. This is my alternative way of getting into Drexel's Nursing program.

Quick question, is this the Drextel online program? There's been recent news that the state of FL i believe is considering not letting grads from the online program sit for the NCLEX. Just something to keep in mind. Also, I'd say go for the BSN, you won't regret it especially if you want to go on in nursing to advance practice

No its not the online program. I like going to school... don't think i'm really cut out for that. I don't understand how they work either. Could you explain...please. Thankx!!!!

Sorry I just looked into it on Drexel's website. It's actually the RN to BSN method which is what many universities do for that method (which would not apply to you). My mistake

I don't think anything is wrong with Drexel. I'll be starting their Spring 2009 ACE (1 year) program. A BSN is a great degree to leave with (considering more options later). If you start off with those tech courses, you may be able to find some work while finishing your degree. I don't know how your program will work, in terms of the co-op.

I realize that sometimes it seems like Penn is the _only_ good school. It's just not the case. Drexel has one of the best engineering programs in the country. Hahnemann had a good reputation before Drexel took them over. Drexel has recently been putting a lot of effort into improving the university, and it has been paying off. I think they're now ranked something like 88 of universities in the country (not bad, considering how many colleges/universities are in the greater Philadelphia area alone).

What I would say is that Drexel is expensive. I don't know how much PIT is. I'd recommend applying to other schools (maybe not in the Philly area at all), and finding one that can offer you what you want (a BSN), with a good education, and reasonable tuition (including scholarships).
