Pre-Nursing Student HELP!!

Published

Hey y'all!

So a little background story to better understand my questions...

I am currently in the military until 2020 (3 more years). I know that I want to be an RN when I get out of the military. I currently live in west Louisiana and when I get out of the military I'll be moving to Texas.

First question is can some please explain if it is possible to pursue my BSN with only doing prerequisites before applying to a school? Am I able to pursue a BSN when I get out the military if I work on prerequisites while I'm in or do I have to go for my ADN,LPN,CNA first and then do an ADN to BSN program when I get out? Basically what would be the fastest route to get my BSN? I know I won't be able to have much of a job while I'm in school and I need to be able to help my husband pay bills as soon as I can.

Next question is if I do prerequisite classes during the night time in Louisiana is there a high possibility they will transfer to a college in Texas?

Lastly should I try and go to a community college in Texas as a distance learning school student like Austin community college for prerequisites? Will it be easier to transfer them to a Texas university when I apply to nursing school?

thank you for any and all help!!

Your pre-req's should all transfer just fine, I transferred the majority of mine from a CC in IL and a private college in MA. You can take the nursing pre-req's and apply to BSN schools once you have them, it's about the same amount of time as an ADN honestly, especially if you finish all the pre-req's first.

Look at where you will live in TX, research the BSN programs and their requirements. Some are a little different (1 requires nutrition, others do not, some ask for statistics while others do not). For the most pare all the pre-requisite classes (A&P, Micro, Chem, Sociology, Lifespan Developemnt) are pretty standard and are taught the same across the country.

Texas does require a full year of US History, and courses in both Fed Gov't and a separate course in TX gov't. if anything the TX gov't may be the only one you will need to take online through a state CC here. Also, look at UTA, they have an excellent online program, and offer all pre-req's online. They transfer everywhere, and if you apply there and have taken your science classes there, you get an extra consideration when applying to the Upper division BSN program.

Ohh okay this is all great information for me :)

So UTA is University of Texas at Austin? That's where my husband and I want to move to when we get out is the Austin area. So is the BSN program 4 years all across TX? Say if I do my prereqs through UTA then apply to the BSN program there, it will still take 4 years to complete my BSN?

Start to finish can be 3 1/2 to 4 years. When pre-req's are done, the UTA program is 15-months. There are several accelerated programs in Texas, the UTA program is unique in that they have clinical locations all over TX, and the didactic portion is 100% online.

No, UTA is University of Texas at Arlington, the university in Austin would be UT Austin. It can be confusing if you are not from here because there are so many schools in the UT system. There is also another program, through Texas A&M that is online. But it is through Texas A&M Corpus Christi and I am not sure where they have locations for clinical, but I know a couple of girls here in the program.
