Pre-Nursing Student (freshman) starting end of august '10

Published

Hi everyone! :) I'm almost 18 and I'll be attending Mount Saint Mary College in New York at the end of the month for pre-nursing. I'm really nervous but also extremely excited. I've heard so many good (and bad) things about nursing students' classes, professors, and over-all schooling experiences. I've wanted to become a nurse, specifically NICU or labor and delivery, for as long as I can remember. I really want this.

I know college will be more challenging than high school and I'm ready for it but I'm just concerned about how well I'll be able to keep up with the workload. I'm motivated and not at all opposed to working hard but I've heard and read about people flunking out because of how intense and stressful it is. I know every person is different in terms of intelligence and determination, but for an average to above average high school student, do I have a shot in surviving nursing schoool? :uhoh21: And any and all advice is welcome regarding preparing for school or anything else! Thanks so much! :D

If you are determined I don't see why you couldn't make it. If you start falling behind in classes, or you are feeling overwhelmed, try withdrawing from a class or two and go back to them the next semester.

I guess I'm just nervous because of what I've heard of my school's particular program. It's a great one but difficult. Thanks for your reply! =)

Hey, I am also 18 and started my first year in nursing this year at Rutgers University. My biology class is really challenging me but besides that class the other classes (chemistry, intro to music theory, English composition I) are not hard at all. I am really enjoying college life. I love being surrounded by people that want to learn. :]

I can tell you that you have to give most of your time to school. I had to quite my job to keep up with all the work. The best advice I can give you is first, be very very organized. Know what is due when. Second, get ahead of the class. Read and do assignments as far ahead as possible. It keeps your stress level down. Nothing is worse than staying up half the night trying to finish homework for the next day. Third, keep some time for yourself. Set aside a time to do something you really love like reading a novel, or going to hang with friends. You don't want to burn out. I go to my BFF house every Sunday night to watch a movie and hang out. Last, if you feel stressed, just focuse on what you have to do right then. Don't worry about next week or next month. You'll give your self a heart attack if you doing that.
