Pre-Nursing Student - Clinicals!!

Published

Hi all!

I'll be starting my nursing assistant clinicals in just a few weeks. I was wondering if anyone had any advice as to what to expect; it'll be within a nursing home facility. Also, what is always good to bring to clinicals? I already have the list of requirements from my school--which is basically just a watch, white scrubs and shoes, and a notebook. But I was wondering if there was anything else I could bring that might be beneficial for my three weeks there.

Thanks!

Honestly as a nursing assistant that's about all you need.

Even in nursing school I try not to bring anything extra because it is so easy for things to be taken or misplaced.

Best of luck!

I moved your thread to CNA forum as they would have the best information on this for you!

Good Luck!

Hi!

I did my CNA two years ago, and that was my first experience ever in the medical field. If you are going into nursing, being a CNA will definitely make or break your decision. For me, it gave me tremendous insight and made me want to be a nurse even more.

The first time I did a clinical as a CNA I was very shocked at the environment and patient interaction. You will definitely be getting up close and personal with someone who is old and often sick. For me this was a first and slightly uncomfortable. I would keep an open mind, wear your scrubs, wash your hands often and even bring a notepad and a pen to take notes. There is nothing more that you really need to bring along with you. I recommend wiping down the soles of your sneakers with Lysol wipes before you leave the nursing home..lots of gross stuff on the floor that you don't want to bring home. Also bring small snacks for the duration of your clinicals. I was not used to the long hours that they had us there, and got hungry easily.

Most importantly, pay attention to the instructor and try remember that you will be playing a vital role in someone's life. Good luck! :)
