Pre-nursing student - some advice?

Hello to all!

I am new to this site & have done alot of article searching for words of advise/ wisdome..

I am currently a student at BHCC (Bunker Hill Community College). Ive basically taken all my pre-reqs for the nursing program except: English 112, Microbio., and A&P2.

I am currently in A&P1 but I feel as if I am not learning what i should. I say this is on both parts- my professor & mine- I work 30+ hrs a week and take two other classes (Human Growth and development:psych & Drug Calc. I know that I need to put MORE time into my A&P studies! To be completely honest, I have a D in this class right now :(. I know I can pass if I work extra hard until the semesters over. I am just a bit discouraged because A&P is like a foreign language to me.. but Ive ordered a few books (The anatomy & physiology coloring book & Marieb's Anatomy and physiology coloring book: a complete study guide) in hopes to better grasp each concept.

I want to register for A&P2, but Im not too fond of picking random professors. There is a professor I'd like to take since the one I am currently taking A&P1 with wont teach A&P2 Fall Semester. There is a hybrid course I am looking into but I am thinking, If i am having a little difficultly now with A&P1, would it really be that smart to take a hybrid A&P2 (even though ive read awesome reviews about the professor).

I take it very hard when I receive a low grade, as my lowest grade since I've started school has been a C+.vA little advice?

Most programs require you to get around a 75 (check your program) in A&P to count towards the nursing program. Check that and it might help you with your decision. Also, you might want to retake A&P I if you feel you didn't get out of it what you need otherwise you will struggle with A&P II and nsg classes.

Hi! I graduated from the nursing program at BH, and to be honest you probably need A's in all your prereqs to get in. I would retake the class(ask your advisor for their opinion and current difficulty in getting into the program). The nursing program is highly competitive and if you aren't getting A's in your prereqs it will be very hard to succeed in getting your AD and that RN license. All the best of luck!

Hi there. I'm doing the same thing this semester at bunker hill myself. I'm taking A & P 1 this semester but haven't done any of the co-reqs. anyway from what i know from talking to nursing advisors is that you need at least a C or 75 numerical grade to even apply to the program. Failing it and taking it again will look horrible because they look at your ENTIRE transcript and even if you repeat a class it will show that you took it before and what your previous grade was in it (i know from experience). Repeating it will not affect your gpa negatively but you will still see it on your transcript. If it was any other class I'd say forget it and try again but you simply CANNOT let an F in A&P appear on your transcript period.

Now here's the bad news (as far as i know) you can only repeat a class if you got a D or an F in it, but i would suggest you talk to an advisor about that because there may be exceptions for nursing pre-req classes as they are challenging for a lot of people the first go. Try to at least get a C in the class and then plan on retaking it because honestly there is pretty much no way you're getting into their program with a C anyway, unless you literally ACE the TEAS and still have a decent GPA 3.5 or higher.

For now you need to cut your work hours. Go to the tutoring and Academic support center at the school, they HAVE free a&p tutors. Ask your professor if you can make appointments with him. Find someone to study with. Find nursing students lurking in the health wing and ask them questions (they're the only ones in scrubs!). Dare i say, if you have to start seriously slacking off in your other classes if you know you've got a good grade....if you have an A in one class and you know if you missed a couple assignments you could still pull of a B or even a C DO IT, do anything possible to get a B in Anatomy.

I hate to advocate lying but make up an excuse to your professor for missing or poor work ask to make it up, ask for help...etc. At the end of the day DO WHAT IT TAKES because someone else will!

As for A&P 2, i recomment dr. hoover, i like him a lot and i think thats probably the professor that you mentioned with good reviews on ratemyprofessor.com.

i am taking the hybrid class. its super easy but it doesn't force you to learn anything, in fact most of the questions from quizzes are online. so if you're not self-motivated, which you do not seem like you are i would advise you not to take it. i'm not learning as much as i should either, but i've been able to keep my grade up to a B. he's a really great teacher though and his classes are fun and entertaining and overall he's a great person. i wish i took the regular in class version with him because i only am at school for 2 1/2 hours a week and i would've learned a lot more had it not been hybrid

As for needing all As to get into the nursing program at bhcc, I know that that its untrue. Ive spoken to numerous advisors. it does look better on your transcript, definitely. I have a GPA of 3.7.. This is the first class I feel like a total fail at but I know that I am an intelligent girl.. We had about 4 snow days and my peofessor rushed through sooo much. I know I can get a B or a C.. But its the whole mastering a&p for myseld that is bothering me. A&p is a major part of nursing.

I think that I have just overwhelmed myself with my daughter, school, and work. Finding a balance is key and I know it isnt impossible!

Thanks for the advice everyone!

yeah my professor tried to rush us through but everyone complained so he changed it, as i said he's an awesome professor.

if you can get a b you're all set but to be honest i dont see how thats really possible considering there is only 16 days left of school. you don't need all a's but i'm not sure that you could get in with a C. if you got a b and did well on your teas i would say you have a really good chance of getting in.

an advisor told me last week that the minimum grade in a&p is a c but those who get a c do not get in.

Goodluck, i'd talk to your professor and see if he's willing to help you out, don't be afraid to tell him whats going on and that you're overwhelmed if he acts like a jerk you can always go to the dean.
