Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Hello Everyone,

So I feel kind of silly because I thought the rest of my college career was ruined, but I still have the potential to bring everything up :) I did more research, and I'm glad I don't have too many credits taken at OSU. I figure if I do really well every semester and take summer courses, I will be able to apply for pre-nursing by 2016, which seems forever away but I am willing to wait and work hard to get there. I'm going to get my CNA and doula certification by then and I just want to get some opinions. I originally planned on switching majors and getting a bachelor's in human development and family science, but what do you think of me just taking all of the pre nursing pre requisites as well as a few of the credits that I will need for my wanna-be minor in cognitive science? I don't think it's completely credit stacking to get a higher GPA because I will be getting a minor by completing the necessary courses, but it is non traditional because I've never heard of anyone aiming to get their minor credits done before even starting a major. I don't know, I don't know. Please talk to me about this.

Thank you!

I think that sounds like a more feasible plan..... As far as the doula work just an FYI it doesnt HAVE to be a certification, you can take the workshop and reading but I think certification is really only useful if you want to continue to work as a doula for a long time (and even then its more of a personal choice because most clients dont care if you are certified or not) I for example and a DONA trained Doula, but am not certified.

As far as the minor goes it depends on how important it is to you. I think its better to focus on the nursing pre-requisites to make sure that you get the best grade possible and if you still have a semester left before starting the nursing program then go ahead and get those done

Do you get a fair amount of clients being a doula? I didn't know you didn't have to be certified but I guess it makes sense, haha. I think it would be better if I were though because I don't believe there's a big demand for it here.

I don't think it's weird to finish your minor before starting nursing school. At my university, it's actually required that you finish your minor before you can apply to nursing school.

I just moved to a new area and I have an 8 month old so I have not offered my services here. Once I get some extra money I am actually going to pursue Childbirth Education, because it doesn't require working on call and being out of the house for extended periods of time at unknown hours (and thus interfering with school).

But how many clients you get is completely up to you. Being a doula is essentially OWNING a small business, you'd have to market yourself and create contacts in the right places

I'm kind of confused. You have to apply to pre-nursing? Isn't pre-nursing just the prereqs to get into the nursing program? At my school pre-nursing isn't a separate school you apply to within the university. It's just what you are considered until accepted into the program.

I don't know, it's kind of confusing, because I think it can be considered applying for it, yet in my head I'm going to complete the prerequisites then actually apply for the BSN program. But, pre nursing students have nursing school advisors so that's a difference. Sorry if it's not clear because it's not clear to me either, haha.

Yeah, I figured because I had emailed the woman who is hosting the workshop and she said it would be an advantage for me to go to school for business if I was planning on becoming a doula. And I JUST realized that I won't be able to attend the workshop :( I won't be in Ohio in October. I would have to research when and where there are any coming up in Minnesota.
