Pre LPN OR RN ? Have chance at both.

Definitely go for the degree and the RN.

I say go for it !!! there are not that many jobs out there for LPN's. If you want to get your LPN while you are finishing school it would be vey good experience. But the way health care is going LPN's are being phased out.

Hi,
I am new to the forums here but had a pre entrance nursing question. I am applying for an LPN school but also still have a chance to stay in college(only 6 hours left to graduate) and get a double major and graduate with a Psychology and bachelors(RN) in nursing. It will actually take me about a year and a half more to finish college with a bachelors in nursing. I was so wanting to get an LPN and get moved back to AZ.
I guess my question is if any of you had a choice to go either route(keep in mind I haven't been accepted to either nursing program yet) which would you choose? I could possibly be accepted into the LPN program(find out in June) but with the Bachelors in Nursing I wouldn't find out for another year. I am having a hard time deciding and thought maybe any advice may help.

Hi: I am currently enrolled in the nursing program at Pima Comm. College. If all goes well,I will graduate with an associates degree in nursing. I was considering getting my LPN. But after speaking to numerous people,including someone who got there LPN,and then their RN. Everyone agreed that going for the RN degree is the way to go. Good luck with your efforts. Tracy

Thanks for the replies. Well, I couldn't come up with money to finish college with an RN but I took the NET test and I have been accepted into the LPN program which I was able to get grant money for. I start in August and will finish in October. This school says that I can transfer to another school and get my RN in an extra year.

I have considered working in AZ and as an LPN and going back to get an RN. Not sure now. Does anyone know what the starting salary is for a new grad LPN in AZ? Or are there any schools that an LPN can go to for a year and get their RN? Just trying to see what would be best for my family.

Maricopa community colleges have a program that will finish in a year ...........as far as starting salaries are 34,000 - 38,000 but it all depends on who you work for........ Good luck !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think LPN's earn alot less than that. The jobs I have seen, that aren't agency, are paying about 13-15/hr. I looked into because I thought about taking the LPN test and working as one while I finished the final year of the RN.

Well, I start my nursing LPN program in a little over a week.:chuckle I am really excited. I did find out that I can transfer to one of the Maricopa Community Colleges and try to get in Block 3 for the RN program when I am finished.

Have any of you been in this program? I was wondering because I didn't know if it would be really hard to work part time and finish the program for RN at Maricopa Community Colleges. I am sure I will need to work so we can afford to live in AZ. I also have a husband and two children. Any advice? :rolleyes: Really want to go all the way.

I graduated from Gateway community college in Dec 2003 .... I did it working full time and going to school full time YES it is not going to be a piece of cake but with the support of your husband, family and friends YOU CAN DO IT !!! Yes you don't have a life for awhile, but the end result will be worth it. I don't have any children so that part was easier for me but a lot of my class mates did and with good support they did fine. Literally, take it one day at a time, if you look at the big picture to much it gets very overwhelming. Play the games you are asked to play to make it through, ignore the politics, accept a C as a good grade find a study group that wants to study, stay focused and you will do fine !! Awesome, I am glad to know that others have done it. That helps a lot in making the decision. I know it will be difficult but I am sure(like you said) that it will be worth it. I would rather go ahead and finish up the RN instead of waiting. I am sure having an RN will give me a lot more opportunities than the LPN. I will remember to take school one day at a time.

Yes there are more opprotunities as an RN. Again congrats and good luck !!!! Keep us posted as to how you are doing ..............
