potential student...someday

Hi, I am not a nursing student but am interested in becoming one. I am interested in attending wcccd but am not clear on whether there are gen ed requirements in addition to the pre reqs needed to apply for the program. I have looked online and also spoke with an advisor today but neither was very helpful. Truthfully, I haven't even applied yet. I work full time and have 2 kids and am at the exploration stage right now. It has been so long since I have been to school! I am looking for advice and guidance and would appreciate if anyone would be able to offer either. I don't mean to sound like a helpless idiot but I am frustrated. I went there to ask my questions after making a few unsuccessful phone calls and left without gaining much info at all! Do I need the gen ed classes or just the pre reqs? AAAARRRGGGGHHHH!!!!!!

You don't need general ed classes before applying to the program, you complete them as you are doing your nursing courses, just the pre-reqs.

general education classes are classes like: psychology, english, math etc.. and generally are pre reqs. most schools have lists of classes that they would like you to take before entering their program. other schools may not have any requirements other than a high school diploma. it depends entirely on your school. i would inquire with the school again and make sure to ask the school to go over what is needed to apply to their program.

good luck

My school has a sample schedule that shows you taking the gen ed AND pre-req's with the nursing courses. No one ever gets that schedule. I needed to go to school full time to get enough financial aid to cover for everything, so I took 4 classes each semester, except the semester after my 3rd baby was born, I took 3. This helped me knocked all of those gen ed AND pre-req's out, as well as some of the requirements for the BSN.

You had to complete Chemistry, Biology, and A&P 1 and 2 before you could get in. They would allow you to take the gen ed and Microbiology while IN the program.

Sorry you didn't get much help. Try again, and say "i want to set up my sample schedules of what I need to take to get in." Say you are looking to get all your ducks in a row, and need to have it all plotted out so you can see how workable it is for you. I had to go to 3 advisors, but finally I got one who helped me lay out a 5 semester plan to maximize my course load without bogging me down. Of course, it wasn't set days and times, that can only be set a few days before registration, but I had an idea of what I needed to take, and not take a lot of heavy writing classes the same semester and such. It also let me see the future and adjust when I opted to sneak in a summer class, and open up a spot for a "fun" class.

It will be a long bumpy road, and even though you are in the scoping it out phase, you need to be aggressive. It is almost like faculty tries to keep us out of it, unless we FIGHT for it. Best of luck! Keep us updated!

Thanks to you all! So far you have all been more helpful than the advisor I spoke with. Here's another question- at WCCCD there does not appear to be a math requirement besides medical math and there is NO chemistry. Is this accurate???

What is WCCCD?

No,I'm from Michigan.

My school requires you to have Algebra, Biology, and Chemistry before you can apply.

I attend a CC and am in my last semester of the RN program, and I did not have to have Chemistry, but I did have to have several math classes. Good luck!!
