Potential to be rehired as an RN if I quit as a CNA

I've been working as a CNA PRN at the hospital closest to me. I really hate working PRN because I'm always on a different floor working with people I don't know. I never know what I'm getting myself into that day and find myself worrying about what floor I'm going to be on CONSTANTLY. All floors do things differently and the RNs get frustrated with CNAs who don't know the routine. It may sound silly, but it really stresses me out. I recently got a job at an assisted living facility and I believe I will enjoy it much more. I've only been working at the hospital for 2 months. If I turn in a notice, will I still be able to get rehired as an RN after I finish school? I don't want to destroy my chances of getting a job there in the future, but I also can't keep putting myself through the stress. I've considered working both jobs for a while, but I've realized that I can't schedule two jobs around school.

Welcome to AN! The best place to seek answers are with your facility's HR department. Many facilities have differing policies.

Agree with Rose: your HR department will have the most accurate answer.

Though IMO, quitting a job after just 2 months does make you look like a flight risk to them. Plus the fact that if you quit, you will no longer be an internal applicant but a former one, which may or may not make a difference. I would consider keeping the job if you can--perhaps cut back the hours, or transfer to a part-time position on one unit to get some stability?

Best of luck whatever you decide.

Do you know exactly what the CNA workload will be like at the assisted living facility? Do you hope to become a geriatric nurse after you graduate from nursing school or do you want to work in acute care?

I'm interested in geriatrics but ultimately want to earn my master's degree which will require hospital experience. HR says that you will be "favorably reconsidered" for rehire if you turn in a notice. The only way I could stay at the hospital is if I continue to float floors which is the sole reason I want to quit. I'm just going to take the ALF job as of now. There are plenty of other hospitals in my area if my current employer doesn't choose to rehire me in the future.
