Postpartum/Antepartum from MedSurg/Tele?

Published

Hey everyone, I'm currently working on a busy medsurg/tele floor at my hospital. Have been working for them since June as a new RN. I'm already getting burned out and trying to broaden my horizens into a new evironment. I've been giving some serious consideration to postpartum. Our hospital combines PP, Ante partume and Nursery-you can float to any of them once trained, but LD is a closed unit. I don't think I'm interested in LD but am interested in the other areas of OB. I think it would be a happier (for the most part) environment with people being generally healthy, with the exception of antepartum. Anyone move over from medsurg or tele to such a unit? How was your move? I know It'll be like learning all over again since the care is so different from what I do now. I'm hoping my small amount of experience on tele with help me atleast somewhat with the change. Any opinions? How do you like OB?

I can't speak to transferring from Medsurg to PP, but I currently work PP (first job out of nursing school) and I LOVE it!! If you can handle medsurg, you'd pick up PP in no time!! :-)

I spent 2 years on a heavy med/surg floor with a stepdown unit before transferring to Mother/Baby. We don't do Antepartum, that's part of our L&D, but I love caring for the moms and babies and have found my med/surg experience to be a nice foundation to build new skills upon. I also love that I'm not worried that my patients could drop dead on me at any moment of the day (obviously they still COULD, but it's much more unlikely) :-)

That's what I am looking foward to as well! :) The stress of people being so sick and so on the edge of crashing many times, it just get's overwhelming. I really hope I can get into our OB unit soon.
