what degree do you want to end with?

Nursing Students Post Graduate

I have been reading the forums for about three weeks and I never knew of the different types of degrees that you could receive. What degree do you want to end with, what do you plan to do with it and what made you choose whatever degree it is that you want? What made you want to do what ever it is that you plan on ending with?

What degree do you want to end with?:

PhD

What do you plan to do with it:

Nurse Practioner and open my own office.

What made you choose whatever degree it is you want:

I want to go as far as I can go and a Nurse Practioner is something I would really be interested in becoming.

What made you want to do whatever it is that you plan on ending with?:

Hmm... well... I want to practice nursing, but I still want to practice independently and be able to help the patients as much as I can. I'm quite aware that doctors and nurses have totaly different approaches to care and I'd rather be a nurse than a doctor. But... to each their own.

Specializes in Ortho, Med surg and L&D.

Hi,

I'd like to end up with a few degrees in multiple disciplines. I am not exactly sure what I plan on doing yet hope that it will always be in conjuction with patient care. :)

Why do you ask?

Gen

I ask because I never thought about all of the degrees that you can earn as a nurse as your start off. As I read through some of the posts, people list that they are enrolling is classes for certain degrees and I have never heard of half of them. I am really just looking to learn what types of degrees are out there and what you can do with them. I do want to contuine to something that will give the option to work for myself and not always have to be under someone. I want to try travel nursing for a while.

What degree do you want to end with?:

MSN in Trauma/Critical/Acute Care & Ph.D

What do you plan to do with it:

Nurse Practitioner/CNS and eventually Research for NIH.

What made you choose whatever degree it is you want:

Truthfully, when I get that Ph.D and become Dr. Stanley, I want to gloat to my friends who became medical doctors and called me just a nurse. LOL :)

What made you want to do whatever it is that you plan on ending with?:

I want to be in the trenches so to speak of trauma care. I eventually want to form a trauma team that services underprivileged areas (God knows they need it). There are many communities that need this kind of expertise. In DC/Baltimore where I live Trauma has been elevated to its own science, no longer just another nursing specialty.

Wait... never mind... I think I understand what happened. Good luck in your plans!

Do you have to have a PhD to open your own practice as a Nurse Practitioner?

I don't think so... but I think they are trying to make it that way. (To have a doctorate to become a NP).

I just have suicidal tendencies and I want to see how far I can go.

Specializes in Education, FP, LNC, Forensics, ED, OB.

Right now, the MSN is required for NP.

There is talk that DNP will be the requirement in the near future. Not PhD.

That's a doctorate right?

Correct. Doctorate of Nursing Practice. I provided a link above.

So you did. (Wasn't paying attention). Also a PhD is more of a degree for those who want to do research in a particular field, no?

PS A PhD is different from a Doctorate.
