SUNY BUFFALO ABS May 2014

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

I'm looking for others applying to the UB ABS nursing program for this coming May. Past classes have helped each other out and kept each other updated on important information and I'd like to get that going for the May 14 hopefuls!

I thought the message in the end of the application was that they may call you for the interview, but now I see that is not always the case. I also applied to Niagara University and they called me in almost right away, thats why I got so worried about UB. So nevermind!

I am worried that my answers in the application weren't long enough, although in my opinion I fully answered all of the questions  How much did you guys write?

Don't worry too much! A concise, well written paragraph is better any day!

When I went to the info session over the summer I think they said they used to interview but not so much anymore. They also suggested about 600 words for the essays so mine were close to that.

omg, jjmm, 600 for each question??

..or for all of them?

etnursing, I hope they think so too

I think each, but now I'm second guessing myself...LOL! I wouldn't worry too much, as long as you get the point across with good writing skills I would think that's what they're looking for. Mine had to be longer anyway since I'm an older student and my overall GPA isn't as good. I hope mine weren't too long now... I think we're just nervous!

Hey all! I'm glad I finally found this thread lol. I also applied for this May. My academic history is pretty all over the place. I graduated with a 2.9 GPA from Geneseo for undergrad, a 3.67 from grad school with a Master's in Public Health, and have roughly a 3.7 in prereqs. I also did a semester of NYU's accelerated program last year before dropping out due to the INSANE tuition costs, and finished with a 3.76. Like I said, a little all over the place. haha. I was also accepted to an ADN program for this spring, but I'm really hoping I get into Buffalo. I got an email yesterday that the syllabus that they reviewed was cleared for credit- hoping that's a good sign!

Oh gosh! I don't think mine were even close to 600! Resume panic. I think we're all just psyching ourselves out...

Hi everyone- I'm another one waiting on word from UB. It's a good thing I'm finishing up my prerequisites right now so I have something to keep my mind occupied. These last couple of weeks are going to be tense though!

Hi all! Does anyone else have prereqs to finish up this spring? I thought I would have pharm and nutrition, but they did not accept my old developmental psych course (did not cover whole life-span was the verdict) so it looks like I would need to complete 3 courses this spring. Does anyone else have 3 or more to complete?

On another note, I randomly met someone who is currently in the program last night. She says she is exhausted, has no life, but thoroughly loves the program. Feels very prepared to begin her career and that the education she is receiving is excellent. It was so nice to actually speak with someone currently going through it! I think I kinda grilled her, but she was awesome and kept answering my questions. Interestingly, she also works full time in the evenings, which was a relief to hear. She was still surviving. Is anyone planning to try to work while in the program??

Ack! It's so hard to wait...

Hi jjmm. I did like Trocaire. The clinical experiences are really good- they have a dedicated mother/baby and peds rotation (2 separate) which is really nice. Also mental health. These three classes/clinicals start before the actual semester so you can focus on that specific topic, and then the ends of those classes overlap with the regular semester classes. It's a pretty good set up, except that you begin a month before the regular semester begins so your breaks are a lot shorter. But still much more or a slower pace than the ABS program. A negative (besides the tuition) is that some of the students aren't as academically-prepared as I would assume UB or ECC students to be (those programs are so much more selective). But, I feel I got a lot out of that first semester and in many ways would be very happy going back to complete the program.

On the flip side, I think graduating from UB opens up doors that maybe the other programs don't offer. And personally, my goal is to be an NP and the idea of completing a two year program, and then a BSN, and THEN a graduate program just seems like an incredibly long road! This will be a second career for me. :-/

Wow she was working full time too? That sounds crazy! I also have prereqs to do if I get accepted like psych, chem, and pathophysiology so you're not the only one!
