Polk State Fall 2018 Hopefuls

Published

Hello everyone! This is my very first post, but I have been snooping for awhile now. I didn't see a current thread for Polk State Fall 2018 hopefuls so I figured I'd start one, so that I could find others like myself that may or may not be in full on freak out mode!!!

Here is a little about me...feel free to share a little bout you! I am a 34 year old mom of 3. I have a teaching degree, but unfortunately, the school system sucked the joy right out of that! I have instead homeschooled my kids for the past 8 years while working for my husband helping him get his business up and going. My oldest is now getting ready to start high school and I have been feeling lead to step out and do something new...plus we could really use 2 incomes now that the kids are getting older. My passion has always been helping people and being a paramedic was always on my list of dream jobs, however their hours are hard with having an active family. After much thought, I have decided to pursue a midlife career change and become a nurse! My family is super supportive and thinks I would do great. With that being said, I am freaking out at all the change and the what ifs!

I have all but my science pre-reqs complete. I am taking A&P 1 over the summer and applying for fall pending completion in hopes I can take A&P 2 and Micro while doing the nursing program (if I get in); however I hear it is harder to get accepted without all your sciences complete. I have a 3.75 overall GPA and a 3.64 program GPA. I also have a bachelor's degree. I am taking the TEAS this Friday. I have taken 2 practice exams and scored a 72 and an 81. I am hoping I can pass it but am finding it difficult in the science section since I haven't had A&P. I am holding on to hope though that I can pull it off and end up getting accepted somehow for the fall. I am not getting any younger...LOL!

So what's your story? Past or current students have any advice?? Hopefuls want to freak out with me?? All are welcome!!!

So update! Passed my TEAS with an 80.7 and am registered for A&P this summer! Still hoping for Fall admission. Anyone else???

Hey mama_bear!

I moved to Florida last year from Colorado to attend Polk State and get my nursing degree at PSC as I have family out here. I'm not getting any younger either and as much as I loved teaching people how to ski it's more of a hobby and not a calling. I've been snooping on your post since March but I didn't want to respond until I took the TEAS today. Anyhow, my overall GPA is a 3.4, a program GPA of 3.8, and a TEAS score of 90.7. I don't have any previous degrees.

May 15th is fast approaching and I'm both nervous and excited. :)

Awesome!! Tomorrow is the big day!! I wish you the best of luck and hopefully we will see each other in the fall. The waiting is excruciating though! I hate the not knowing!!

Hello all! I applied for Fall 2018 as well, I am very nervous and I am starting to freak out over how to calculate my points only because I am a little confused about how to properly calculate my program gpa. Can anyone help with this? I am sitting at a 114 I think?

If you go to your degree audit in Passport it tells you what your program GPA is. I have 122 points, so hopefully that's enough!!

Yes but my degree audit shows a math class I received a C in, but I recently took Stats and got a B (an 89...that one hurt lol) but that doesn't show up there? I would assume they would use my math class with the higher grade?

Probably. I would just swap out the points for the B for the C and recalculate. It shouldn't be a huge difference. They are only a point different.

Hi mama_bear!

I transferred to PSC last Fall from HCC to avoid paying out of state fees for my A&P1 class at HCC. I ended up liking it so much at PSC that i ended up staying permanently and decided to apply for the nursing program this upcoming Fall. A little bit about me :) I'm 22 and finally after switching multiple schools and degree paths I've chosen to go into nursing. I've always wanted to be in the health field but couldn't find a good fit for me until I realized I wanted a career where I was hands on with patient care. Originally straight out of high school I was accepted into USF on a scholarship and was going for a bachelor's in Health Sciences in order to continue into becoming a Physical Therapist. The year after I switched to HCC for sonography, and then later nursing until I transferred to PSC.

How is A&P1 going for you? I took it at PSC in the Fall for the third time and FINALLY passed. I hope it goes well for you! I know A&P2 and Microbiology are killer together but doable depending on how dedicated you are. I took them both together in the Spring and just got by on passing them since I didn't take it as seriously as I should have in the beginning of the course. With your GPA and score I'm sure you have a really good chance of getting in for the Fall! Goodluck to you! We can do this!

I am currently making an A in A&P 1. I applied for the fall nursing program. If I get in I will be taking nursing and A&P2 together, which I am sure will be brutal!

I'm sure you'll do fine then since your're doing so well in the class! I was mainly trying to get all the prerequisites out of the way since I know Pharmacology will be a lot, I'll definitely be asking my coworkers to help me get through that class

Afternoon everyone! I wanted to pitch in on the post. Last year I barely missed the cut with 14 spots remaining for the alternates, but I dedicated to studying and this year I passed the dreaded TEAS with an 81.3, MUCH better than my attempt last year (only securing and alternate spot). If I remember correctly, there is not an alternate list for the Fall term. This is coming from Dr. H at the first meeting we had. However, I'm not sure if this entirely true. But my total points are coming to be 117. I'm very excited about this term and hope too see some faces at the meeting. Ps, I hate the waiting game haha!
