Hello, I am a new graduate and was board certified in July 23.  I am close to getting a job opportunity which I would have to move. the move does not bother me, the opportunity is to work 830-530 Mon Tues, Thur, Fri  and Wednesday 08:30-11:30  and dialectics from 1-2 pm.  The only issue is the commute is 42 miles on way so that is 84 per day.  Would I be unreasonable to ask to work from home on the 3 hour day. it is for a hospital system. I am curious on new graduates and what they were willing to put up with to get a first opportunity.   also on-call is 7 days for 1 week every 7 weeks. so about 52 days per year. I love to hear any input on if this sounds good or how u would handle negotiations.  this would be my first Psych NP job if I am offered it.

You're asking questions that depend on location.  In the western U.S., a 42 mile commute one way is no big deal.

As for working from home on the 3 hour day, what is normal for that organization?  Do some of the PMHNPs work remotely or on a hybrid schedule?  If not, then it is doubtful they would allow a new grad, especially, to work from home 1 day per week.  Or they might be open to it after you've demonstrated clinical competence or after your probation period.

I am curious, what are dialetics?

If you are a new grad, and this is your only offer, then take it!

I agree. Beggars can't be choosers. You are lucky to be given that opportunity as a new grad PMHNP. I finished my program in October 2023 and passed the ANCC board exam in January 2024. I work at the VA and I am NOT working as a PMHNP. I have applied within the VA system but have not heard anything. Even in the private sector, it is difficult to find a job. I am in Southern CA. The VA has PMHNP residency programs but it is good for external candidates only. If you are already a VA employee, they will put you on a student stipend ($83,000 at the VA in West LA-yikes!) and you have to obtain approval from your supervisor to hold your position for a year while you are doing the residency. Needless to say, I can't live in southern CA with a student stipend income so my search continues. If anyone has any leads, let me know!

Ten years ago, I could literally call (because I often did) random organizations and get a PMHNP job, get emailed credentialing documents to sign, and start working.  At one time, I had a full-time job and four side gigs bending around my schedule.  Now, with all the fly by night online universities and random other RNs and NPs that are becoming PMHNPs, those days are GONE!   One of the reasons I chose the field, other than intellectual curiosity, was the supply and demand imbalance.  At this point, I don't see our discipline as highly successful.  We stabilize people and get some sobriety out of them for a while, but generally their lives are still miserable, and the clients cannot differentiate mental illness from the emotional wallows of a bad life.  I'm sort of tired of the latter.
