I have been a psych NP for about 2 years and currently moved positions to a place where I was seeing 20-30 patients per day to a place where I am seeing 60 per day. I feel very unhappy now since the number of patients are way too many, I get paid per hour and feel utterly abused in this position. Not sure if this many patients are the norm in psych. what are your thoughts and advice.?

60 patients per day is way too many. Please find another position and get out of there ASAP. The general standard now, which I think is too high, is 20 min per follow up appt and 40 minutes for a new patient intake. So if I only see follow up patients in an 8 hour day, I would see 24 patients. However, when I saw patients in-person, there were a lot of no shows. I had days when hardly any patients actually showed up. With telehealth, almost everyone shows up, but most days I still have 1-3 no-shows.
Some practices only allow 15 minutes for a follow-up, which is way too short. Even with that, in an 8 hour day seeing only follow-ups, you'd see 32 patients per day.
Honestly, I have no idea how anyone could see 60 patients per day. This place may also be submitting fraudulent claims, depending on how they are coding the visits.
There is nothing inherently abusive about being paid hourly, as long as the hourly rate is market standard and you get paid for the hours you work.
There is a dire shortage of mental health providers, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding another position.
Best wishes.
