PMHNP Boards-2020

Hi everyone,

I passed my PMHNP boards today and frequently visited the site to figure out study materials/ tips and I wanted to pass along some knowledge.

study materials

- so I used the purple book and pocket prep together. I would read two chapters and then do 50-100 questions every day until I worked through the book and answered all of the questions. Luckily, pocket preps questions are directly from the purple book and rationales had direct page citations so it was a nice way to move through the book and reinforce topics. I worked through these before board vitals.

The ANCC iq questions were pretty good and probably most resembled the board questions. I would recommend saving these until the end.

board vitals- I heard mixed reviews regarding this source from numerous people, but I found this to be super helpful. I only did the easy and medium level questions when constructing my practice exams because the "hard" were basically impossible. The ethics/legal/policy were especially helpful. Overall I would highly recommend doing this once going through pocket prep and the purple book

Lantern review- I got this kind of last minute and would not buy this product. Again heard mixed reviews but I would not use this. A lot of the topics were too basic and others too random. IMO I would skip this.

-advice: do pocket prep and pp to get a solid foundation then work through bv. Also, make sure to do practice exams that are 175 questions under timed conditions. Also, make sure to hit your "checkpoints" on time during the exam- after 1 hr should be in the high 50s, 2 hrs should be at 100-110 and so forth. I'm usually a fast test taker and only had 3 minutes to spare

- for the exam itself, I had quiet a few NMS questions, ethics/ QI/policy stuff. I felt the questions were pretty random. Also, make sure to hit what part of the assessment gets documented in which section- though process, where to document SI. Dementia was big. Screeners-phq, cows, ciwa.

Thanks to everyone for your tips. I took the exam last week and passed. I have taken 4 nursing exams (LVN, RN, AANP-FNP and now ANCC-PMHNP). Not sure if it was covid because I finished my program in May 2020 or just life but I was the most unprepared for this exam. I have always tested immediately after finishing the program but this time I waited 6 mins even had to renew my authorization to test. Like all have said, I found the ANCC IQ to be most like the board exam. Board vitals was good for me because I felt like I needed an overhaul. After taking the test, I would use board vitals for content and ANCC for format. I also used exam edge and that was just for my comfort in taking practice tests. I consistently scored about 65% on the practice exams but I also consistently learned something new with each one. I also used pocket prep and it was good, I can’t say it helped much for the exam though. I remember topics on lithium, inhibitors/inducers, maoi washout,  the majority seemed like judgement calls based off theoretical knowledge.

Last minute advice from me to anyone taking the ANCC PMHNP board exam.

What I used to study was the ANCC IQ question bank which resembled the pmhnp exam, pocket prep was a little off but great for content. Don’t waste your money on lantern review, I thought it was outdated to me, Fitzgerald was no good. I also used purple book and a review course by Yvonne PMHNP-BC. She is absolutely amazing. Her review was spot on and the truth. Her policy and Ethical review saved my life on the exam because my weakest area. She has all 5 domains plus a comprehensive PMHNP review. I did all her domains and the comprehensive review and I was fine. If you are struggling to pass definitely take her review. She also has a study plan she gives to all her students. Absolutely worth the money compared to lantern review and firtzgerd. I wasted my money on those and still failed first time but then I found Yvonne’s PMHNP review and I thank God I did. Try her out and also sign up real quick for it because the class gets full very fast. Her website is: www.pmhnpexamprepreview.com

The best review book is personally written by a fellow PMHNP and not a large publisher that has not been through a PMHNP program. An expert that has been through an actual PMHNP program followed by completing testing. I would recommend High Yield Psychiatric nurses review, which is available on amazon current an ebook but will be in print soon. Best of all it is not expensive like some of the other study materials.
