Board Vitals is very difficult and nothing like the exam. It’s worth doing to get the practice and learn some critical thinking. But I generally scored 50s and 60s. IMO that’s great. BV is too detailed and it’s unrealistic to know all of that anyway. But I think because it was so hard it prepared me for the actual exam.

Thank you!

I just passed the ANCC PMHNP exam last week! I just wanted to let everyone know what I did to pass... maybe it will help someone ? I read everything I could find here in allnurses.com and it really did help me... I studied for one month! 5-6 hours of studying time M-F.

1. 25 free sample questions from ANCC for PMHNP and the 25 free sample questions from AANP for FNP here's the link

https://www.nursingworld.org/certification/our-certifications/study-aids-ce/sample-test-questions/stq-fnp/

https://www.nursingworld.org/certification/our-certifications/study-aids-ce/sample-test-questions/stq-pmhnp/

2. board vitals all 1619 questions https://www.boardvitals.com

3. the ANA book called....psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner 4th edition review and resource manual.... I read the book once and 100 practice questions from the back.

4. another book called....Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Exam Secrets Study Guide: NP Test Review for the Nurse Practitioner Exam. I only read the test secrets and strategies for taking exams and the 50 practice question they had in the back...

5. Fitzgerald PMHNP exam review ... I went over the whole thing once... it takes a long time about 18 hours

6. Prayer to pass examination...(they have very good prayer samples in Google :)) This is the last step but the most important step!

I recommend taking several practice tests (at least 4) without open material and with time limits to increase Mental Focus and Endurance.... and then going over the tests to learn/study...

Thanks for the advice!

Congratulations!! I am pretty much doing the same, but I am finding the questions from Board Vitals are quite tough. I am scoring in 50-68 range. Yikes! How did you score on Board Vitals?

Thanks for advice or wisdom you can impart! ?

Hello,

I passed boards on 12/30! In my opinion, the Purple Book and the ANCC questions are all you need! I also did a few quizlets here and there and studied for 2 weeks. Best Wishes to all and Congrats to everyone who has passed the Exam!

Congrats! How did you feel about the exam? I know there have been some changes to the format resulting in fewer policy questions and more clinic-based.

Hey everyone! So my peer just took the test (dec 27) and said she didn't recognize 1/2 the stuff asked on it. She failed it by 3 points. The Barkley's prep and everything else she used felt pretty useless to her. Pocket prep just sent out information that they are updating their system to study for the new exam but it's not ready yet and for those of us about to take the test, it truly stinks. She said it was very difficult so for anyone ready to take it soon, know your stuff!! I decided to wait a bit longer to take it until I'm more confident because I'd rather wait 2-3 weeks than 2 months to have to retake it and spend another $400. The ANCC website is very unclear as to which one is the question prep so haven't tried it but will look for it since it makes sense they will have it reflecting the new test. Examedge and pocket prep have been my go to.

I am studying for the boards, was wondering if anyone can help me with the link to buy The ANCC study questions (200 questions).

Thanks

Katp,

Thanks for the insight. Did your friend happen to say what she found so difficult about the exam or how she studied for it besides Barkley's? Did she struggle with clinically-based questions, policy questions, or just overall? Thanks for your post, it is appreciated! Hope you and your friend pass!

Hello all! I took the new exam (Post Dec. 16) today and passed! To be honest, it was difficult exam, I took the full 3.5 hours, and I was not confident when clicking the submit button. However, I think everyone should consider that we know how to critically think by now if we have come this far, and that’s what this exam is about. I’ll share what sources I used:

1. purple book from ancc ( read once and did practice questions)

2. Fitzgerald live review ( a must in my opinion... it’s expensive but to me, it helped the most)

3. The pmhnp practice IQ course on ancc website (worth it)

4. Pocket prep (inexpensive is perfect for the on the go)

that’s all I used! Best of luck to you all!

Sincerely,

...A new PMHNP-BC!!!
