These are some questions that PMN-NP new graduates and students would like to know. Any feedback from experienced nurse practitioners is appreciated. 

 

MAIN DUTIES PMHNP? 

What are the main duties of PMH-NP?

How important is interpersonal communication when working with clients? 

Is i50 % listening? 

Is 50% talking?

APRN-PMHCNS versus PMHNP?

 

PMHNP SAFETY 

How often do practitioners experience safety concerns? Is this common? Are violent patients a common occurrence in outpatient? Maybe once a month, once a week, or everyday?

Is safety a more significant concern in private practice? Or in large facilities? 

Is safety a more significant concern in inpatient or outpatient? 

How do you set boundaries with patients that are dangerous? 

How is outpatient different from inpatient in terms of safety? 

Do PMH-NP experience safety risks regularly? 

What is the biggest liability in working as a PMH-NP? Lawsuits, physical injury? 

DEMAND FOR SPECIALIZATION 

Is there enough demand for psychiatric nurse practitioners to specialize in a field of their choice like working exclusively with women with postpartum depression or in pediatric psychiatry. 

Will the demand for working from home disappear after the lockdown ends? 

How does a PMH-NP subspecialize? 

 

QUALITIES OF PMHNP 

What qualities are most important in working as PMH-NP

Empathy, patience, ect ? 

FUTURE OF PMHNP WITH THE EXPANSION OF TELEMEDICINE?

How will PMH-NP impact job security in the future? 

Is telemedicine expanding demand?

Will telemedicine impact salary?

This reads like grad school entry reflection questions to APRN roles...

Specializes in mental health / psychiatic nursing.

I would hope that new grad NPs would already have a good sense of answers to most of these questions, and as would many students - doing research before you get into the field is a good idea!

You can easily find much of this information by reading threads on this forum (or use the search feature if you aren't finding stuff readily) - or via Google -- there are a number of websites - including professional organizations - which typically have an FAQ on the specialty for prospective students and students which address many of these areas. 

If you are wanting more of a dialog with current PMHNPs - maybe try offering some information about why you are asking and keep a shorter list of questions to start out with?
