I haven't seen a thread made yet so here we go! Anyone else applying to the PLU 2020 EL-MSN cohort?

Hey everyone! I made a Facebook group for this years cohort (I didn’t see one yet), you can find it if you search PLU ELMSN 2020. I can’t wait to meet everyone!

thanks for the info @Dylan Miller I received a rejection today. It was hard as my family is moving to Tacoma area this year and I was hoping to go with. Let me know if you have any advice for improving my stats or application.

For anyone on the waitlist, I will be giving up my spot in the program. Best of luck to everyone!

What did you decide to give up your spot? Did you get into another program?

Yes, I got into Seattle University’s DNP program and my ultimate goal is to become a nurse practitioner so this is a more cost effective/faster route for me! Also, I’m from Seattle and I currently do not have the resources to move to Tacoma.

Hi guys! Congrats to all who have already received admissions to the program! I am new to this forum and I am currently on the wait list. Is anyone else waitlisted or does anyone have information about how the wait list works and how admissions makes decisions to pull people from the wait list? I spoke with someone from admissions and they said it wasn't ranked.

@calgirl11 I'm sorry about the rejection. Revise your application and try again next year!

The biggest tip I have is to get people to revise each component of your application. Of course the letter and resume are the most important pieces to get right, but definitely have someone look over the application as a whole and see if everything fits.

So who do you ask to peer review? You want to get medical professionals, but specifically people who are familiar screening applications. This will include medical board members, nurse managers, or any other healthcare worker you can think of who frequently reviews applications. For example, two my my peer reviewers were my nurse manager (who hires staff on our unit in the hospital) and the direct of palliative care across the UW branches (who frequently mentors medical school students). They have lots of experience reviewing applications and had a lot of constructive feedback that helped me build a strong application.

Something else that may be useful to hear is to be ready to scratch everything and start from the beginning. I rewrote my letter of intent at least three times from scratch and revised it a countless number of times. The most useful feedback is usually the harshest, and sometimes that means sucking it up and rewriting your letter of intent (or whatever it may be).

I'll leave you with details of my application for reference (I was accepted the first round for the PLU ELMSN 2020)...

Undergraduate Degree, UW Seattle, Public Health GPA 3.52

Standalone Courses, Seattle Central College, No Degree GPA 4.0

2 Years Work Experience at UWMC as a Patient Services Specialist

1 Year Work Experience at UWMC as a Patient Care Technician

3 Month Work Experience at Sequim Health and Rehab as a CNA

6 Month Volunteer Experience at Hall Health UW

4 Year Member of UW PrePA Club (2 Years Member, 1 Year Vice-President, 1 Year President)

Lots of shadowing experience of MD's, NP's, PA's, RN's. Definitely over 50 hours total

I hope this helps! Good luck!

Thanks so much for the information, your resume is impressive and I will take the advice as I move forward. Good Luck at PLU.

Hi guys! What are your housing plans? Staying on campus or finding an apartment? I'm trying to figure out what is best as I will be moving from the bay area.

Hello Everyone in PLU ELMSN program!

I want to know if anyone knows the acceptance rate for this program. Also does everyone has a lot of patient contact hours? I am thinking about a career change and am currently in an unrelated field.

Thanks for the feedback!

Hey!

Just found the thread! I'm excited to meet all of you (at least virtually) really soon. I was wondering if anyone had heard of/had any experience with people who were accepted to the FNP track during their MSN portion of the program? I'm curious how many people complete with a COM vs FNP and such.

See ya soon!
