Okay...let's see. I took nursing research this past summer, and basically, you learn about the different parts of a research article and what you find in those sections (the abstract, lit review, etc.) You learn basic history of medical research leading to the measures taken today to protect subjects in experiments. You learn about the different types of studies (qualitative vs. quantitative and then the subtypes of those). Methods of data collection, statistical analysis of data, and types of inferences, correlations, and conclusions which relate to different data collection methods and experiment designs are also taught. There was much more, but that's just a kind of brief synopsis.

The class I took had many assignments done on a bulletin board for WebCT, three exams plus the final, and a project which entailed groups of us examining different research articles on the same type of subject (for example, my group looked up articles on various aspects of the treatment of pediatric pain).

I personally found the class to be very helpful. I learned to better be able to find all those pesky nursing journal articles needed for referencing in care plans, etc. quickly. It was also helpful because the following semester, and now again for my senior synthesis project, we had to pretty much design and implement our own research project.

My course outline was the same but we did two tests and one big paper. We wrote a formal research proposal for the paper. I can't say I think I learned anything of use during the course, it actually kind of soured me on reading true research papers, and I would never want to be involved in a study as a nurse.

zzzzz Research class was a real bore, unless of course you are planning to do research after you graduate. I don't know why we have to take the class. I think it should really be optional depending on your interests. We had to do three papers, the first was 10 pages, the second 12, and the third 15. We had to critique different aspects of research articles that were really quite boring. I hope this helps, and good luck!!!!

Hey! I go to USC and completed Research last semester. It was BORING. I spent $40 for books I opened maybe twice.

Anyway, our instructor used her own powerpoint notes and covered the first 8 chapters in the book. The instructor really made the difference for us. She tried to get right to the point with what we needed to know, and provided us with examples of the different kinds of research and examples.

We had to do "research in the media" notebooks and this consisted of looking for research articles for every week of the semester and writing up a paragraph or two about the findings.

We took two tests (multiple choice, fill in the blank) and the final was optional.

We had a poster presentation that we worked in groups at the end of the semester where we tied it all together.

We critiqued a couple of articles. That's about it.

Really, it wasn't a hard class (semesters before us had papers) but it is hard to apply research at an undergraduate level, I think. I am sure it will be more beneficial if we go on with graduate classes.

Research is just something we must do as nurses. Make the best out of it as you can. Good luck.
