Please HELP!!! I am so confused

Published

I am new graduate and my only wish is to make it in the OR. I was offered a per diem RN position in an eye surgical center and a 4 month preceptorship of 600 hours non paid experience in the OR in St. Josephs hospital... Which one is going to help me more in my future as a nurse and landing a job in the near future? what should I do?

Thanks for your advice!!!

St. Jo's will give you the experience and is going to help you hands down.

Specializes in Peri-op/Sub-Acute ANP.

I have never heard of an unpaid internship. Is that something new? Even if they are training you, that just sounds like exploitation to me.

I would go work in the eye surgery center and expand from there once I got some experience.

Wow, I know that this is a great experience, but it certainly is a "Sweet Deal" For St. Josephs.

Do they offer you a paid position in the Eye Centre when you are done your 600 hours?

Well, it certainly will be a good experience, and will look crazy on a resume, but they are asking an awful lot of you aren't they?

Good luck, working in eyes is very detail orientated & repetitive so will sure be a great way to reinforce sterile technique, working with delicate instruments, and hands on patient care in an operative setting.

Have A Great Experience!

I think it really depends. There are some ORs that do a lot of ophthalmic procedures so if you took the per diem job it might help you get into an OR that does a lot of eyes and that would be an advantage for you because it is so specialized. The OR I work in now does many eye procedures but many of the circulators don't circulate in that room because there's so much to learn so the room is usually assigned to the same team. So you could use that experience and be very valuable should you choose to work in a Main OR. However, the St. Joseph position seems like a great opportunity. If you can afford to take it then I would definitely give it a chance- especially if you are looking to work at that hospital.
