#1. The order reads to infuse 500 mL normal saline intravenously (IV) over 5 hours. The drop factor is 10 drops/mL . What is the flow rate of drops per minute?

500ml/5hrs = 100ml/hr 100ml x 10gtt/ 60 min = 17 gtts/min

#2. Order reads 150 mcg Synthroid by mouth daily. The medication label reads 0.1 mg Synthroid per tablet. How many tablet(s) should the client receive for the dose?

150 mcg convert 0.15mg/0.1mg x tab = 1.5 or 1 1/2 tablet.

#3. The medication order reads Isoniazid 0.3 Gm po every day. The tablets in the bottle are 300 mg each. How many tablets does your patient need for this order?

0.3g convert 300mg/300mg x tab = 1 tablet.

#4 Gentamycin 80 mg in 100 mL of normal saline is to be administered over 30 minutes. The drop factor is 10 drops/mL . What is the rate of drops per minute?

100ml/30min x 60min/1hr = 200ml/hr. 200ml x 10gtts/60min = 33 gtts/min.

#5.Benadryl 25 mg IM every 4 hours PRN is ordered. The ampule is labeled 50 mg/ 2mL. How much do you draw up?

25mg/50mg x 2ml = 1ml....:banghead: Please check this one it looks wrong for some reason??????

I do appreciate ALL of the assistance that EVERYONE has given me.........

ALL of your answers are correct :)

yes, all of your answers are correct.

when calculating drip rates, the drop factors of iv tubings are gtts/ml and are calculated into the problems along with a conversion factor of 60 minutes = 1 hour in order to account for the mls/hour infusion rate. when you work these problems by dimensional analysis you are getting rid of the unwanted labels on number terms and "ml" and "hours" are the labels you want to get rid of.

example:
the order reads to infuse 500 ml normal saline intravenously (iv) over 5 hours. the drop factor is 10 drops/ml . what is the flow rate of drops per minute?

we want gtts and minutes and dumping mls and hours:

500 ml/5
hours
(amount and rate to give)
x 10 gtts/
ml
(drop factor of iv tubing)
x 1 hour/60
minutes
(conversion factor)
= 16.666 gtts/minute, rounded off to
17 gtts/minute
[ml and hours, by design, are going to be factored out]
