Planning move to California

U.S.A. California

Published

Hello everyone. I'm planning to move to California. I was actually looking at either Texas or California from New York. I have two kids and I'm a single mom. So I'm looking for a family friendly area where I can also work. Any recommendations of where? I'm done with New York winters etc. my son is always sick the entire winter and asthma and it's so expensive here but I see California is the same in that area. I'm looking for somewhere that would be good for my kids and good for me for work. Thanks in advance!

I'm actually considering the same thing. My first piece of advise is to go ahead and endorse your California license since the BON is super slow. I'm actually going to be doing something other than nursing but I have to work as a nurse for a little bit longer to get my other thing up and running.

I live in California. Not all of California is expensive. Generally, the closer to the ocean, the more expensive. San Francisco Bay Area is the most expensive, closely followed by LA. San Diego County is still relatively affordable, especially in North County and the more inland areas. The Central (San Joaquin Valley) pays well and is also affordable, but air quality can be a problem due to the agriculture. You might want to look a the desert communities like Palm Springs or areas that are up in the mountains, like Northeast California, that would have excellent air quality.

Thank you both! My friends and family are telling me San Diego is good for family and work. Do you agree with this? I've only visited Los Angles. Thank you again in advance!

I applied to a bunch of jobs in Cali as a new grad but was unlucky, so I'll be signing a contract in DC. But once that's over, this information will be good to have! Thanks!

I'm in SoCal and it would be harsh on your kids asthma with Santa Ana winds. Cost of living here is slavery. I actually would love to move to Texas for culture. I'm a native and it's not the same place I grew up as a kid. Bottom line, make sure a position is secured. Manageable finances makes things easier to deal with for sure. Best wishes

Make sure you have a job before moving to California. if you try to job hunt while in there you will use of a lot of money.
