places to live by UMDNJ

U.S.A. New Jersey

I will be moving to NJ this Aug from the west coast. I'll be attending grad school at UMDNJ in Newark and I'm trying to figure out my living situation. Can anyone give me information regarding which areas are safe and not more than 10 minutes away from the nursing school? Also, I am looking to either find a roommate or rent out a room/basement, so if anyone is interested or knows someone who may be of help, please PM or email me. Thanks!

Newark is a tough town, but I just received a pamphlet from a new apartment building near NJIT, an engineering school a few blocks from UMDNJ. I will try and track it down. So look for housing near any of the Universities located in Newark. Rutgers, NJIT or UMDNJ. Good luck, Donna

PS I am currently in a Phlebotomy program at UMDNJ, and I do my lab work in Newark. I never had a problem there. They also have a new mayor that wants to make Newark a safer city. Also check bus schedules to see if there are areas outside the city withn easy reach of UMDNJ, http://www.njtransit.com/sf_bu_schedules.shtml you can PM me!

I would try to stay close to the Rutgers University or NJIT campus. Newark is like the murder capital of NJ right now, murders last year was at an all time high. I'm not trying to scare you or anything, but I wouldn't stray too far from those two college campuses. A friend of mines went to Rutgers-newark and didn't have any problems living close to campus there. I know you said that you don't want to be no more than 10 minutes away from UMDNJ but I would suggest the town of Belleville, Kearny, North Arlington or Nutely (living cost is higher than newark but its much safer), these towns are about 20 minutes away from UMDNJ (if that).
