Im also at Glasgow Caledonian, Im a 1st year student midwife. We're just about to go onto week 3 of our first placement. The best advice I can give you is have a go at everything you can, ask everything you want to even if you think its too trivial to bother people with and wear comfy shoes:chuckle

I'm absolutely loving it

Ive been on labour ward and post natal for a week each and then from monday Im on 4 weeks community. Its fantastic to be out there and 'doing it' for real.

Where is your 1st placement?

Caley is good, now that I can find my way about!! I think we get some of the same lectures as you will, especially psychology, sociology and maybe physiology except we get them in our seperate wee group (theres only 26 of us compared to 400+ nurses)

Some placements are good about your needs as a student but some you will feel unsupported at, this is in part due to staff shortages & wards being busy but sometimes it just cause the staff can't be bothered with students. It was like that on the ward I'm on at the moment last week but I worked with my mentor today & things were better. You just have to ask to do things & if there is things you feel happy doing just get on & do them, but at the same time make sure you don't end up being a hca & you do learn something from the placement. If this is your first placement & you've not worked in the hospital before then I'd say you need to be focusing on basic care of a patient, washing, dressing feeding etc...

I'm a clinical practice teacher.. and we often have students here... I'd say.. be on time (winds me up no end when students saunter in an hour late!) try and look smart- I have to! and ask questions! I work in general practice and its really hard when you have a student who is like a sack of potatoes and just says nothing for 2 wks!! we really dont mind how daft the questions are- we're happy to answer and teach. Having students is great for us because it keeps us on our toes..

so have fun and enjoy your training.
